Proto Man to Playable Via DLC in Mega Man 9
« on: September 21, 2008, 11:18:53 AM »
According to GamesRadar, Proto Man will playable as a downloadable character on October 6 for 200 Wii Points.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16719

On the heels of Mega Man 9's release date announcement comes information about the game's downloadable content. Slated for an October 6 release, the first bit of downloadable content will be a playable version of Mega Man's robo-brother, Proto Man. Proto Man will be able to slide and charge his shots, which is something Mega Man cannot do in the new game. He will also be able to use his shield to deflect small enemy fire. However, he will be knocked back twice as far by large enemy fire.

Mega Man 9 will be available on WiiWare on September 22 and Proto Man is scheduled to be available for download on October 6 for 200 Wii Points ($2).

I was a little hesitant about this because I've never been a huge Mega Man fan but after playing Capcom's remake of Bionic Commando and hearing all these cool little tidbits, I am buying this game day one no questions asked.
Hopefully that will be tomorrow.

Well that pretty much guaranties that we'll see areas that cannot be reached without the ability to slide.

Wonder what's next.  Ever want to play as X in an old school (Mega|Rock) Man and see how much metal you can scrap with all those extra abilities??  Find out for only $3 dollars!

This is why DLC is total BS.
You're not paying for extra content, you're paying for something that could/should have been in the game to begin with.
This is why I'm glad Nintendo isn't utilizing DLC in its high-profile games. People bitch about Brawl not having DLC but we would have just ended up paying the cost of the game again in fees to buy all the characters we got to unlock for free.

I agree; this is disappointing.  They should have designed it to keep in theme with the game.  If you want more content, just buy more Wii points and send them to Dr. Wily.

If it keeps you from accessing the areas/items in the game, it shouldn't be DLC.   Now if the DLC included updated sound tracks like the PS2 version of the Megaman Collection did, I'd be all for that.

Capcom is asking you if Protoman is worth 2 bucks.  If he isn't, don't buy him. Simple as that.

No one thought he would be in it, then they announce the DLC and everyone cries that they want it free.  Meh... buck up.

I'm down with this. Part of MM9's appeal is going to be the almighty speed run. I'm betting that Protoman will help get through the game a little faster. Besides, $2 is a fair price (to me). Here's why:

Buy $20 of Wii Points

- $8 for Vectorman
- $10 for MM9
------------------------------
$2 left over

- $2 for Protoman

Huzzah!

I'm up for it because $10 is a low price for a Mega Man game, even a retro one like this.  Had this appeared on the GBA, it would have been $20, DS would be at least $25, if not $30.  The only way this would have been so cheap regularly is if it appeared in a collection, and they just did that last generation, so don't expect it any time soon otherwise.  I might spend up to $10 on this game's DLC, if it's worth it with playable characters that control differently or extra bosses.

Seriously?  SERIOUSLY?  You CANNOT be SERIOUSLY encouraging this sort of bullshit, when it is the kind of thing that would be included as a reward for beating the game not 2 years ago...

DLC should only be used for new content created AFTER the game has been released.  It should be like an expansion pack for PC games.  If the content is in the game already and just needs to be unlocked OR the DLC is available from day one and they thus COULD have put it on the game to begin with they are ripping us off.  They are holding parts of the game hostage.

I don't understand how anyone can support that unless you're on the payroll of the companies themselves.  If you're not then you're a sucker.  I'll probably still get Mega Man 9 because it sounds like a cool game but I won't buy Proto Man on principle.  If they added Proto Man months later and he was not in the game already then I would consider it.  But this is exactly the sort of thing that all the conspiracy nuts were hypothesizing a few years ago.  Those who assumed the worst were right.

And the whole "well then don't buy it" argument doesn't work for one reason: stupid people outnumber smart people.  "Sending a message" doesn't work because tons of morons or suckers or people who have the money and just don't care will buy this.  You can be a smart shopper all you want but there will always be a big group of tools that make your gesture insignificant.  So that's why I complain every time it happens and will complain until that 90% that f*cks things up for me grab a brain and figure it out.  They won't.  They never do, they never will.  But it's still worth pointing out.  It doesn't affect me?  Yes it does.  I have to pay an extra $2 to get the full game when less than five years ago that would not be the case.

Yeah, all that extra DCL kind of sucks. That's eight more bucks for stuff that could've (should've) been in the core game. I would have preferred paying $20 and getting all that content at once, really. I probably wouldn't use all of it, but at least it would be THERE.

Having said that, I still think that Protoman is worth it. Hero Mode might be cool if the core game isn't tough enough, and Special Stage sounds good.

You know, here's what I don't like: I could look forward to new DCL for Mega Man: Powered UP! on the PSP almost every week from the game's launch to just over a year later, when DCL support stopped. And this was some sick DCL, like new Roll costumes, challenge stages, new build-a-stage parts, and, yes, even Protoman as a playable character.* And it was all FREE.

I don't know why Capcom is going the nickle-and-dime route. My guess is that it's Nintendo wanting to make as much money as possible out of the game. The Big N knows that MM9 is a huge WiiWare release, and that many, many people will buy the extra content. I'm betting that if it was up to Capcom, we'd be getting a slightly more expensive, but more complete, game.

*Protoman was actually unlockable in Powered UP!, but to do so, you had to complete all of the challenges in Challenge Mode. Some of the challenges were damn near impossible, so I had given up on ever playing as the Blue Bomber's older brother. I was very happy when, as their last hurrah to Powered UP! players, Capcom offered him as DCL.

Oh give me a break, are you honestly blaming Nintendo for Capcom screwing over the fanbase with this sh!t?  If Nintendo wanted to screw people with DLC they could have easy done it with all they're own games that would have been much bigger hits then Mega Man 9 that's for sure.

They could have made Luigi DLC in Mario Galaxy, but didn't.  They could have made Hyper Mode in Metroid Prime 3 DLC, but didn't.  They could have made Sonic and Snake in Smash Bros Brawl both DLC knowing full well most gamers would easily pay for both of them, but DIDN'T.

The DLC scaming in this game is Capcom decision and Capcoms alone.

I agree - this is the last thing Nintendo would do.  They'd rather not even have DLC, I'm sure.

I think the real issue is that this DLC is a rip-off, plain and simple.  It's not worth the extra $8.00 you'd pay for it.  Paying for a Hard and Super-Hard mode?  Are you kidding me?  At this rate, I'm surprised they didn't make you pay for each boss.
