The import GB Player does have a boot disc, so in order to use it you will need a Freeloader or Action Replay, unless you want to mod your system.  All the menus will be in Japanese.

As for the disc, there have been a lot of people wondering if they could buy a replacement disc and not have to boot in Japanese each time.  The other thing is, some people are wondering if the hardware is the exact same, and by using a different disc, it gives you the American menus.  No one will really know until they get a US GB Player, unless someone can get Nintendo to talk about importing, which isn't likely.

You'll need to wait until PGC or IGN gets ahold of one, and then ask one of them to try for you.  But if you're planning on importing, be prepared to be using the Japanese disc forever.  I wouldn't hold your breath on a US start-up disc.

You could also wait closer to the US release.  My GB Player cost me $83 with 3-day shipping.  The US version costs $39.99.  Prices might go down if you avoid the initial rush.

That's outrageous.  With shipping, mine is running under $70.

Not too outrageous.  VGD was selling for $60, had a deal to get 2-day shipping for $5.  But they couldn't garauntee me color, so they didn't get my business.

NCSX was selling for $70, as was The Rage.  But then add shipping, and you're hitting $80s.  Japan Video Games had it for $60, but their shipping was at least double everyone else.  $42 for overnight, even ground was running $15-20.  So I passed on them.

Where are you buying from?  VGD?

Yeah,  I ordered from VGD with a Majora's Mask orchestra CD and a Nausicaa T-shirt - all together less than $100.  If color's important to you, I can understand not going with them since all they got were platinum.  I checked the shipping confirmation, and it's waiting for me at home.

All they got in were platinum?  Surprising.  Glad I went with NCSX then.  I have a Spice cube, wanted a Spice GB Player to match.

All the disc does is tell the system to access the hi speed port.  After that, the disc stops spinning.  You can take it out, swap in a different disc, doesn't do anything.  So it's very possible that using a US start-up disc with a Japanese GB Player will work, but you're better off just paying another $20 for a Freeloader.  I really don't see why that idea has become popular, but it really wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Hmm...it will be interesting to see if the menus really will be affected by a US disc.

Oh..and yeah Spice and Platinum would be nasty.  Black would have looked cool with it though.

Black wouldn't look too bad with any of them.  That's why they choose black as the one American color.  The modem and BBA are also only in black.

However, with that being said, purple still look better with purple, silver with silver, orange with orange.  But not everyone can pay nearly double just so two pieces of plastic look alike.

but the modem and bba are just a little square on the side.  this is the like an inch around the bottom.

and no one really answered my question if it would be possible to use a US disc with an imported player.  (if the us version uses a disc anyway...  also has not been answered...)

Well, the answer is we haven't been told yet.  We can't even guarantee that a US disc will make any difference with the menus.  The menus are easy to figure out though... There are borders to choose from, screen size, controls, resolution (sharp, soft, normal), a parental timer, and a cartridge switch function.

And the silver lining at the bottom of my purple cube looks just fine.
