never had a problem with sunshine controls. Felt like a tighter Mario 64 (other than not being able to do a long jump... i missed that long jump :() and it was awesome running thru levels once you knew them and jumping/hovering around like an acreobat. i should go back and play that..

I've been thinking about this lately and this will likely be debated like crazy; I think Mario Galaxy might be the classiest Mario platformer ever created.

The level design is extremely creative and inventive. The Mario platformers have always featured great level design, but Galaxy puts it on a whole new level. Love or hate the mini galaxies you have to give them credit for being colorful and attractive to the eye.

Second is the music. I don't need to further explain this. All of you know it rocks.

Finally, the story. It still has the typical "Bowser kidnaps Peach"  plot element that right now is too classic to be called a tired cliche, but the advent of Rosalina and the Lumas really put the game above and beyond any Mario release. Rosalina alone might be the deepest character in the Mario universe right now. Combine this with the surprisingly bittersweet but hopeful ending (a first for the Mario series if I am not mistaken) and you have something special in the Mario canon.

People will likely debate which Mario game is better till the end of the time. I personally believe the preference is related to personal experience and memories.

For example, I liked Mario Bros. 3, but I enjoyed Mario World a lot more due to the fact it was the first game I truly beat and spent a lot of time with. Mario 64 thrilled me with its dimension and creativity of levels. Mario 3 had the awesome costumes and power ups.

I could go on, so there might never be a best Mario game. I will say this, though. Even if I didn't replay Mario Galaxy as much as expected it did leave a lasting memory. That's how special Galaxy was to me.

Just bought Sunshine a couple weeks ago and MAN.....the controls make me want to quit video games.  After spending so much time w/ Galaxy and 64 recently, controlling Mario here feels like a chore.  In the words of Miyamoto, it almost feels like a "Sega" game, particularly when using the FLUDD.

Anyone else have this frustration?  Most of the reviews I've read don't really mention it.  I almost wonder if they were messing around with IR during this iteration and contemplated selling a new controller w/ the game.

That said, I still dig the Sunshine idea as a offbeat Mario game, I wouldn't mind a Wii sequel at alll.

When I originally played Sunshine I thought the exact opposite.  I was like this controls so much better then N64 and Fludd gives me the leniency I need on some things.  Though I do think that aiming Fludd can be a pain.  Though a Sunshine Wiimake would be fun.  Maybe they could rectify there Sins and bring the Koopa kids back.

I don't know why the controls feel off to you. I wrote a long post about Sunshine's versus Galaxy's controls a while back and I feel that they're both perfect for the context of their game. Sunshine has the tightest "earth" controls for any platformer to date - the physics in that game is incredible. Whereas Galaxy has "floatier" controls yet they are completely intuitive because of the space setting.

i enjoyed sunshine a lot. i think the problem was, with me, i don't particularly enjoy doing the same level five times. especially when i KEEP FALLING OFF THAT STUPID TRESS INTO THE WATER GAAAHH!H!H!!! submarines.

at least it was yellow.

but i digress.

SMB3 rocked the world, and unfortunatly Nintendo has never seen a reason to do it again. M64 did great things to video games, but unlike the zelda games, Mario seems to get amnesia after each game and forget what made the one before it fun.

like tanooki suits. mmm. tanooki suits.

i mean, i want fireballs, yoshi and (oh noes!) LUIGI in a mario game. SMB3 was fun game for two players. not since has Nintendo tried to make it, mario, like Link, is now a loner.

uh, i think i forgot my point, so eat your vegetables and listen to your mother.

Glad I wasn't the only one!  I must have fell off 20 times due to awkward camera angles.  Luckily I figured out a way to get the boss while skipping the sub path.

Love the camera. Love Sunshine. I always regretted that Nintendo or any other company didn't make another platform with controls that free. Seriously? No one can copy a 6 year old game after all this time?

Yoshi's Island DS is not abhorhent. It deserves more praise and should be recognized as being one of the best platformers on the DS. I can agree with you on F-Zero GX all the way IceCold but when it comes to Yoshi's Island DS, you are way too harsh.

The problem with Mario games today is that you can't do speed-runs through them. With Sunshine, I've tried but it still takes a couple of days to get 100%. Of course, I'm not playing in one straight sitting. However, speed runs do make you appreciate how well the camera is put together. There is only one bad spot with the camera and everyone should it know it by now. Climbing up the fences to the top of the ferris wheel in the amusment park. Everything else is good.

Personally, I fight with the camera more in Galaxy.

Best mario game? I don't think it has been made yet.

Closest so far:

2D - Super Mario World

3D - Super Mario 64 DS.

Holy brother of cod, Mario Sunshine has the best 3D platformer controls I have ever experienced.  Loads better than Galaxy, hands down.  I would much rather have free reign over the camera than not be able to control it at all, and while walking on walls and ceilings is cool, I would much rather just walk on plain old THE GROUND if it means not having to fight with my control stick.

You people are crazy.

ahahahhahahah the other people here will call you crazy because they can't stand manually controlling a camera.

I'll give Mario Galaxy the edge since it brought back the long jump, there's no FLUDD to slow me down, and has a better sense of air-to-air platforms unlike Sunshine's exceedingly terrestrial backdrops.

But Sunshine does provide that versatility of go-anywhere, use any method mentality to traverse a fully open stage.

I want Super Mario SunGalaxy where all the good elements are combined, minus FLUDD.

I love Sunshine, it's an amazing game, but it's the worst of the 3D Marios by quite a bit. I have Galaxy as my 3rd best game of all time and Super Mario 64 as 4th, I have rankings through 15 and Sunshine isn't even in the discussion. And to answer the initial point of this topic, Super Mario Bros. 3 is 1st on that list.

I can't agree.  I believe Mario 64 is the worse of the 3D Marios, unless we count New Super Mario Bros as 3D.  Personally I like Galaxy much more then Sunshine because of the linearity of it.  I just felt the Sunshine was way to repetitive and Open for its own good, plus it killed the Koopa Kids and brought in Bowser Jr.  which was a mortal sin that is beyond redemption.  Despite that I think its a wonderful game.  I do think that just playing around I do like Sunshine better.

*shrug* To each there own.  I maintain that Mario Bros 3 is the overall best and New Super Mario Bros is the most disappointing of the bunch but I'm not in the majority.
