Wow. Just wow.
Of course, being the Nintendo and Zelda Whore that I am (I have a gold Game Boy Camera! Whoo!), I had to have both copies. As with the OP, I'd planned to get the GCN Zelda, used, on the cheap, down the road.
Well, between all the internet rumors of the GCN Version being hard to find and the fact that my itty bitty Wal*Mart sold out of 15 or so copies in one day (which just happened to be my day off), I decided now was the time to get me a copy. (Also, the fact that Circuit City has it on sale for $38 helps). So, I get on the horn and start calling.
Every Wal*Mart within an hour's drive is sold out.
Pamida (about 30 mins away) is sold out.
Circuit City (hour away) is sold out.
GameCrazy (hour away) is sold out.
All three EBGames (hour away) are sold out.
Toys R Us (hour away) is sold out.
Best Buy (who I typically dislike)... I call them, wait on hold forever... call back again.... someone finally picks up. He looks in the computer it says they have a "sizeable quantity", but he wants to check the shelf just to make certian. He comes back and says there aren't any on the shelf and he's going to look in the back, if I don't mind holding (of course not!). About five mins later, he comes back: "Yeah, we have plenty". So I explain to him that I'm about an hour's drive away and ask if he can hold me a copy. He's all "About an hour? Naw, we've got plenty... you'll be fine." So I was all whiney "Are you suuuuuuuure there will be one when I get there?" "Yeah...".
So I speed over to Evansville (the town that's an hour away), but first I stop by Circuit City to grab an ad so I don't have any issues trying to price match. Then I fly over to Best Buy and sprint back to their video games... three copies left. Now, I don't know what this guy's idea of "plenty" was, but dang... either they sold a lot, fast, or he's crazy. Anywhoo, I grab a copy (and while I'm looking around, someone else grabs a copy as well)...
Also, check recent eBay auctions... it's selling from $60- ~$100.
It *is* hard to find right now. In fact, I don't think any other major GameCube game was this hard to find at launch... It all depends on if Nintendo restocks...
