Blue Dragon is a textbook jrpg, but it's really polished. There's nothing WRONG with the game, if you like that sort of thing. In small doses, it's a lot of fun. Typically, I only play the game for a half-hour at a time; any longer than that, and vanquishing Poo Snakes with your +1 Battle Menu starts getting real tedious. The characters are annoying, and as far as I can tell, they never STOP being annoying. I wish more jrpgs let you create your own character. Then your character's only as obnoxious as you unintentionally craft him or her to be.
Of special note is the absurdly melodramatic 80's rock that accompanies boss battles, which goes something like: "This is the beginning!/The lion of the night's ascending!/This is the beginning!/The beginning!/The beginning!/My self-esteem is neverending!" I like to think that whoever chose to inject that music into the climactic boss battles was being silly on purpose.
