He's an engineer and he engineers the settings to work with one particular gameplay he has in mind. Of course that becomes a problem when the corporation says "We liked that setting you made there, make more of it for Us!". The setting is only a vessel for the gameplay so it's not meant to be expanded upon, it's an extra. What really receives the sequel is the gameplay.

That explains a lot about Carmack's games

I have not read a single post in this thread, just here to post something that I thinkyou may not have read b4.

Mario64DS mini games to be included in The New Super Mario Bros.

‘And Mario can also become very small, by using another type of mushroom, right?’ we add.

“Right,” says Miyamoto “and that’s not all. For example, two players can play as Mario and Luigi at the same time, in the multiplayer mode. Sometimes you have to compete with each other to reach the goal, and sometimes they can fight against each other. You remember the game Mario Bros.? In that, Mario and Luigi could sometimes cooperate, sometimes compete. I think it’s more fun to have two players play simultaneously in this New Super Mario Bros.

And you remember in Super Mario 64 DS we incorporated a number of minigames? Each of these minigames is going to be available in New Super Mario Bros. In each minigame both Mario and Luigi can compete against each other. Some you can play in two-player or four-player mode with one cartridge.

Sounds great! But hang on, didn’t Miyamoto mention Koopa Kids a second ago? We haven’t heard from them in a while. We inquire if the new game has the same kind of ‘Level, World, Fortress, Boss’ structure as in Super Mario Bros. 3.

“Unfortunately I am not in a position to tell you anything further, sorry, but basically yes you are right!” says Miyamoto, chuckling.

And it keeps getting better (no actual spoilers, except after the link)):

-At LEAST 80 levels!
-Back to the Mario platformer basics, the things that made people love the originals
-The 3D characters are so that 3D movements such as rotation and sneaking can be carried out easily

And a ton of new screens (including an AWESOME Bowser and a Koopa Kid!!).

Until the game's in my DS actively proving me wrong...I'm still going to keep on assuming this will be the worst return to a classic series since the Phantom Menace.

Im so happy they gave it a graphical overhaul. The old screens were so bland and didn't make any sense in the Mario universe.

Now its Mario

Seriously! WTF is this? Super Mario 64 DS is pretty much useless now, what a waste of money. On the other hand new DS owners who are picking up New Super Mario Bros are going to get a crapload of value, but i'm not one of them so i'm pissed that Nintendo screwed me. Now I know how Ian feels!

...And you did get to play the games a year and a half before NSMB comes out.

I paid $100 for a my NES twenty years ago, and I saw one at a yardsale for $15. Nintendo sodomized me with a rusty pipe!

I think he means that he can play that on the N64 and the minigames in New Super Mario Bros..

EDIT: I don't understand why wandering and Mario aren't even giving this a chance. It's a 2D Mario platformer, for God's sake - the first one in 10+ years at that. And, as Bill said, all the impressions have been extremely favourable.

Haha, that's great, I just noticed it.

And all the impressions say that unlike at E3 the 3D and 2D mix very well.

Oh, I'll be buying it. And I agree the game's been looking better as of late. I'm just trying to not get my hopes up. Returns to classic series after 10+ year absences are almost always disasterous...

The thing about the title is, it absolutley had to scream 'this is not the five-thousandth port of a 20 year old game'. I think it accomplishes that task rather well. And I don't mind the box art.

So are franchises that are turned from 2D sidescrollers to full-blown 3D while still trying to retain their familiarity, and at the same time become pioneers that exemplify brilliance.

This is Nintendo we're talking about.

Well if this is the re rendition of Mario Bros 1 I hope they continue the chain,  I think quasi newly done Mario Bros 2 would be quite trippy.

The same Nintendo that made Yoshi's Story....

Well, no one is perfect. Every single developer is bound to have a few games that don't meet expectations. And you can hardly use Yoshi's Story as an example to counteract Nintendo's astonishing achievements in software.

And, by the way, Yoshi's Story was one of the first EAD titles that Miyamoto was not involved with as a director, producer, or designer. Which explains a lot. He is involved with New Super Mario Bros, on the other hand.

I wouldn't worry too much.

The only thing wrong with Yoshi's Story, as far as I am concerned is that each "world" you could only select one level before you moved onto the next "world"  Meaning the game is short and the only way to play through all the levels is to, well, play the game several times.  Graphics-wise, the game really looked good, and gameplay-wise, the game was really good and sound.  It's just that it felt like the game was rushed out way too soon.

The thing I like the most is the crazy new things of every new Mario game, like tanooki suit, yoshi, metal cap, waterpack, etc but I havent seen anything like that in this game, which ironically features "new" in the title, am I complety mistaken? I havent followed this game closely.

And no, shrinking mushrooms hardly count as "new crazy thing" just in case you were wondering.

Supposedly there's a whole lot more that's new about the game, probably a vast majority of it not even revealed.
I think they focused more on pure platforming in this game, trying to make that new and fresh and innovative, rather than items.
I'm not sure, but it seems like that to me.

Yoshi's Story was probably also limited storage wise.  Don't forget that first generation N64 games weren't all that big at all, I believe the highest at the time was 96mbit and unless you want the game to look like something on the SNES it's gonna be a squeeze to get it on there.
