Paladin:  Some people don't like to use sleep mode.  It is a nice option, but don't force people to use it...because you didn't spend the time to build enough saves in for a portable game.

That is lame...in my opinion.

You know what? I'm glad there aren't more saves. In fact I wish there were less. They should take out the mushroom house saves. Castles and mini-castles should be enough. I don't want mario bastardized just because it's a portable game.

I'm not talking about sleep mode, I'm talking about what is usually called a memo save.  Sleep mode means I have to keep the system on and the game in the DS, and can't play anything else in the meanwhile.

Having the ability to have a temp save between levels, A save that is deleted when you start playing again, does not lessen the game or bastardize it, because it doesn't not make the game easier, because the save is TEMPORARY.  It means that when you play again if you die or whatever you play again from your last perm save like after you have finished a castle.

I really don't have a problem with the save system itself, just that there isn't an easy save option if you are on a tight schedule.

Nitsu:  Actually I have to disagree here.  Temp saves aren't really temp, because you can always start another Temp save.  So unless you totally reach game over, you should be able to find a place to save.

I have no problem with the amounts of saves in this game.  The game gives you two places to save regular...and if you want to buy saves you can use the coins you collect to save at Mushroom Houses.  This to me is a temp save...because you can only use it once...and it should be used wisely.

I do think there may be a problem with fewer saves when the game gets harder...however, you should have so many extra men by that time, that it won't matter.

As for thinking saves ruin the Mario experience.  No they don't.  They may make the game easier to completely, but the experience is had by actually playing the game, and beating the levels.  Saves outside of levels do not make the individual stages easier.  You still must defeat each level with whatever powerups you have obtained, and one reserve powerup.

It is a very limited system...that brings much challenge per stage.  If Nintendo had decided to make more saves this Mario game would still be as fun and entertaining as it is now.

Once you've got some spare coins you can save whenever you want by opening up a new path.

Anyways - since Circuit City had advertised having the game at 5 PM Tuesday and for only $27.99, I decided to head over there after work. I got there around 6:15 PM and there were about 5 people that had the Video Game clerk surrounded asking for this game. She said something to them and they all backed away. I approached her and she told me that's what all of the other people were there for, and that one of her co-workers went to go look for the box as it was apparently missing.

I then strolled over to the DS game shelf and low and behold, sitting on the shelf, was one lone copy of the game.

I completed the first world on my way to work this morning. Hopefully, I have have the 2nd world completed by the time I get home.

Oh and in case anyone had any doubts...YOU NEED TO BUY THIS GAME!!!

I went to my CC at 4:55 and they already had them out (and several were sold). They had them in a really cool little free standing display with game art on it. I'd love to get one of those things.

Hmm... I had assumed it auto-saved,  when I had to go back and play a few levels, I was suprised. I use my DS as an alarm clock, so I can't just put it in sleep mode at night.  Another thing that sucks about not saving after every level is if I want to let somebody else try the game.

I don't see see saving anywhere making the game any harder.  I die several times in each level, yet I always have tons of lives.  13 right now.

Circuit City sucks. Everytime I walk in there trying to find something I always think "Why the hell didn't I go to Best Buy?" I can NEVER find what I'm looking for there.

Anyways, the lack of saves isn't a problem for me as I can't NOT play this game for less then an hour when I pick it up.

A portable game should allow saves without penalty every five minutes (maximum distance, "save anywhere" preferred). If I have to play 15 or more minutes in one sitting I can't save before I have to change trains or the lesson starts. If you want the player to only restore progress from specific points if he fails then put in that read-once save. Don't force long sittings in a handheld game, if you have to do that make the game for a home console instead where the player will give it attention for hours.

Temp saves aren't really temp, because you can always start another Temp save.

WTF? What the hell are you trying to say? Sure you can make another temp save but that won't help you because you have to load (and therefore delete) it before you can continue playing.

KDR:  What I am saying is simple.  Whenever I bootup a game that gave me a temp save, I can play, and play and play...and if I don't get to a regular save place...I can just temp save again.  In fact, I could play that very same level, and lose a life and temp save there again no problem.

With a temp save, if you die, you cannot start over again (meaning turning the game off and then back on again if you screw up, that save is gone forever.) the way you were when you loaded up the temp save.  Say you were wearing a Koopa shell when you orginally did the temp save, but not when you previously did a hard save.  If you die, you lose that koopa shell and cannot reboot and get that shell back.  The temp save was where you had the koopa shell, and now the only way to get it again is find it in a level, and complete the level, because if you stop mid-level and exit via the pause screen, you go back to the map as you were when you went into the level.

I picked it up last night.  Apparently there's some demand for this game in my area because Best Buy was sold out.  That's NEVER happened to me before.  A store either has it or hasn't got it in yet.  This was the first time I ever saw a section on the shelf where the game should be but all the copies are gone.  Fortunately Toys R Us had a huge stack of them.

This game is amazing.  First this is the first game I've rushed to get on day one since Pikmin 2 (Metroid Prime 2 was a Christmas gift).  After over a year of nothing it was nice to be able to have a game come out that made me want to do that again.  Second they've got the 2D platformer feel perfect.  I haven't played a game that felt like this since Donkey Kong Country 3.  Often I find that when an old style game is resurrected it doesn't feel right.  That over time developers have forgotten how to make them.  But this feels like a game from ten years ago would play like, all while not being a total rehash.  The game has some difficulty to it too.  I think I've died on every level so far.  But it's a fair difficulty like the Mario games of the past used to have.

My only complaint is that the "reserve" item requires you to touch the screen to use it which is kind of stupid since the rest of the game doesn't use the touchscreen.  It really seems unnecessary and tacked on.  Other than that my only other complaint is that I have to play this game hunched over a tiny screen.  This is a game I want to play on a big TV with all my friends watching me.

Yeah, I was impressed with the difficulty. I sort of ran the table in the first world and thought "this is too easy", but I'm in world 5 now and it's really kicking my ass. I had to go through 7-8 lives to beat 5-A.

Correct...Not only have I not touched all the levels in the worlds I've been to, but I also haven't touched two whole worlds...In fact, I've found that you only need to access three worlds in order to beat the game...

Or you could, y'know, just close the DS.  That conserves energy well enough to preserve your game until you have a chance to play more and save it.
Unless your battery is running really low, in which case, shame on Nintendo for no save-anytimes and shame on you for not charging it properly.
