The first thing I did when I saw this was look to see when Tetris was coming out in Japan. Seems like the PERFECT bundle and cross-promotion.

A smaller DS will be sweet because it will be that much more comfortable to hold while using the stylus.  Also it looks you'll be able to use the touchscreen a bit easier with your thumb because they carved off a quarter inch off each side as well it thinner.

I haven't checked but supposedly DS Lite is coming out on the same day as Children of Mana so that should already be a big push for the redesign. If Tetris(made by Nintendo) also comes out on the same day expect BIG #'s for all three!!!

"We don't even know where Nintendo is going with the Gameboy line yet. Is the DS the 'next gameboy', or was Nintendo sincere about the whole 'Third Pillar' thing."

Well in North America the GBA has continued to sell really well.  But how many major upcoming GBA games can you name?  I can't think of ANY unless Mother 3 gets localized.  Now the GBA will probably still be in stores for a little while like the NES, SNES and GBC continued to be sold well after being replaced, but as a supported system it has pretty much been replaced.  I think the whole "third pillar" stuff was a tactic to continue selling GBAs for a year or so after the DS launched.  It worked because the GBA sold really well but it has already co-existed with the DS for two Christmas seasons and I don't think it will make it to a third.

If you want a GBA SP with the brighter screen I say buy it now.  GBAs are probably going to quietly disappear during 2006.

Whoa whoa... hold on there.

We don't even know where Nintendo is going with the Gameboy line yet. Is the DS the "next gameboy", or was Nintendo sincere about the whole "Third Pillar" thing.

If there's still a Nextgen Gameboy forthcoming, it probably wouldn't be until late '07 at the earliest, and I wouldn't expect to see the GBA entirely off the market until that happens.

It might make some sense for Nintendo, especially with the recent rumors floating around of an Xbox-branded handheld media device/game system. Coming up with a single screen GB4, then a few years into its lifespan whipping out a DS2 with GB4 backwards compatibility.

Cross-posting is becoming a habit.....

The next GameBoy?

thats an awesome design...i dont think i've seen it before. i'd buy one.

Let's see...

Drill Dozer, from the makers of Pokémon...

Then there's one Pokémon game where its other half is the DS version...if it comes out in North America...

Has Juka and the Monophonic Menace come out yet?  It looks cute, there were lots of ads for it.

Did Scurge: Hive come out yet?  You know, that ismoetric Metroid-wannabe game?  If not, I'd count that.

Was Shantae Advance ever picked up by a publisher?

Okay, maybe I am grasping at straws now.  I'm pretty sure even you could've at least named Drill Dozer, though, Ian.  I'm disappointed.

Oh, yeah, duh.  >_<

And Final Fantasy V and VI.  How could I not list all these RPGs?

I never could finish Tales Of Phantasia on the Super Famicom.  Maybe I'll be able to do it on the GBA.

Maybe Ian doesn't count ports/rereleases/remakes/etc. as GBA games to look forward to, though.

You also forgot Mega Man Anniversary Collection, if it ever comes out.  I'm not sure if the game will ever leave my Micro once I get my hands on it.

I think they're doing a doublepack of 50 Cent: Bulletproof and 25 to Life for the GBA. Of course those will be ports, so they're not technically new.

Ohh man, that's just wrong. Just plain wrong. If its not good on the console, do they expect the handheld version to fare better? (Though 25 to life has been unproven...)

Hmmm, DS lite due out the 2nd in Japan? I'd be willing to wager March 20th for the North American release. That would make it a magical day indeed! Get a DS Lite, Tetris and Prime Hunters! Guess I should start saving...

Am I the only one surprised at how soon a redesign has happened for the DS?  It's only been about a year and two months and already there's a redesign.

I feel bad for those that just bought or got a DS to find out that there's a new version coming out months later.  Ouch.

The new design does look nice though.

why? its not as big a diference as GBA to GBA SP was and I liked original GBA better anyways. But if they make purple I will get DS Light for sure. Also if regular DS price drops I might gt a few more for relatives and such.

Wait, what...why? I loved my SP, I took it every where. It was a huge imporvment over the GBA, and one that I easily justified slapping down the money for when looking at the number of benefits (not having to use battries was great, not to mention stuff like the lighted screen.. which was optional and could be turned off anyway).

I really love this new design, and the moment that the code name "Nintendo DS" started appearing online I knew that when ever it launched it would get a cool redisign with in 2 years or so.  Not only that but I knew I would end up buying both. Im very happy with the new look and can't wait for it, this is coming from  a person with 3 DS's already being used frequently in one house.  I figure the sexier look and Pokemon will allow this to over throw any competition there is, and ever will be(this generation).

Now I know Nintendo has said alot of things about 3rd pillars and the DS not being the succesor to the GBA or something along them lines. But does anyone still believe that?! This is our new GameBoy wether you want to believe it or not. I say they said all that as a clever ploy to throw of Sony during its development of the PSP. Could you imagine if Nintendo decided to release a new "GB" as early as 08? I mean, would it just be a better PSP or would it have all the gizmos of the DS? I could never see a future hand held from Nintendo lacking the DS's abilites. And since we most likely won't ever see a Nintendo handheld with just the power of something like the GameCube I really don't know what people are assuming Nintendo is cooking up. Is any of this coming through alright? Im not sure if im getting it all out, but take that as you will.  If Nintendo releases a  brand new  portable system befor the DS has at least 5 or 6 years on it I will... feel very stupid.

There's also GBA version of Top Spin 2 coming out and Dragon Ball Advance Adventure.

We don't really have much data on upcoming games past April yet, but that's what E3 is for.

The GBA is still a viable and lucrative platform with a huge installed base...

Pardon me if old...

Possibly the US unveiling of the DS Lite on Feb. 9th..

Quote

The latest issue of Nintendo Power reminds readers to keep an eye on Nintendo.com on February 9. Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of marketing, will be giving a speech about "Expanding the Market for Interactive Entertainment" at the DICE Summit in Henderson, Nevada. Reggie's speech will be 45 minutes long, starting at 10:30AM and ending at 11:15AM. In the speech, it's likely Reggie will be highlighting Nintendo's strategy for its Nintendo DS, Wi-Fi Connection, and Nintendo Revolution.

Maybe rev news too??

Wait, wasn't Iwata's speech (where he revealed the rev controller) named something similiar?
