More Nintendo Patents?
« on: May 15, 2005, 03:11:23 AM »
Head over here to find a nice little round up of new patents made, and of course, found.

It gives more information towards the wireless nature of the controller as well as insight to the actual game cases (which are very, VERY weird). It goes into detail revealing that tactile feedback will be present in each controller. The difference between feedback and rumble, is that feedback can give an amount of force with a distinct velocity (direction).

Hopefully it means that if I swing a sword into a wall, the feedback will let me feel the bounce-back.

Theres even more on the controllers. Some patents suggesting that it will have a built in mic, and camera (though maybe not video). Also a speaker will be included, except it seems its only use is for alarming the player when the wireless connection has been wrecked. Who knows, maybe they will have a charachter voice-acting come out of the controller (that would especially be cool for multiplayer RPG's where each person is a different charachter).

To add to the excitement, another patent blatantly states that the REV will allow for mulit-media capabilities. It mentions a port for removable storage that allows the REV to access pictures and such, so that they may be organized and presented on the console. This is kinda neat, but it would be better if I could store media. Also, streaming media from my computer via ethernet cable/WiFi would be delicious.

Nintendo might get into the emulating business by allowing planes, trains, and automobiles to play old NES, SNES, and even GBA games. Their reach might futher grasp the PDA and cellphone market. This should be neat, but nothing aww inspiring.

To wrap this up, there was a rather odd patent that described game-code with the ability to move something in reality. At least, that's what I got from it. If anyone could clear that up....please do, because I am obviously, royally confused.

That motion patent doesn't appear to belong to Nintendo... it mentions them once in the description, but it also mentions the Xbox as a possible target.

Basically, while it seems to be designed as broadly as possible (presumably so they can sue people later, even though this invention appears to be only an incremental improvement on things Nintendo was doing almost 20 years ago), its nothing to get too excited about.

Remember the R.O.B. for the NES that used to move around play a couple of games with you? This is basically the same thing, only this patent proposes transferring commands to him from MSN IM clients and speech-to-text convertors.

I'm assuming with the advances in robotics in the past couple of decades they could create something pretty fun, but the vague wording and broad-reaching descriptions seem designed more to cash in on other people's inventions than anything.

That Gameboy emulation thing is about providing games on airplanes and hotels and such.

It says that on page 49.

The haptic patent is patented by Immersion.  MS bought the rights to Immersion's R&D in 03 I believe.

nemo: MS bought a 10% share of Immersion as part of the settlement for infringing upon their patents for controller vibration. They haven't completely acquired Immersion or its patents. That would be stupid for Immersion anyway because they exist only to license patents.

Another Nintendo patent - filed in 2004

Has something to do with an attachable HDD to a videogame system, some say it pre-emptive patenting hoping that X360 & PS3 will somehow infringe on this patent and owe Nintendo $$$$

Did Nintendo SAY that there was going to be an attachable HDD? Or was that DVD functionality?

This was discussed to death a long time ago. In sum: unless the controller features a built-in jet propulsion system, this kind of "feedback" is physically impossible.

The point of the patent wasnt that easily glossed over, was it? "OMG! Hard drive!"

The patent is about a security/digital rights management setup of some kind. Not the hard drive per se, although that's a means to an end.

There is basically no chance of us finding any useful information in any patents because they're usually not filed or whatever until well after we know about whatever is being patented.  For instance, the DK bongos patent just got filed not too long ago.
