It looks to be a a Japanese murder mystery dojin soft visual novel series based on the NScripter engine, produced by 07th Expansion.

It's the game one of Bill's favourite series is based on. More exactly the PS2 port, it was originally a PC indie game. Bill will happily fill you in on the details.

DS is d00med!

Seriously, though, I think PSP has decent potential as a secondary market, just like GameCube, and Capcom seems to have found a way to exploit that market.  Wii may actually unconsciously help PSP, because a lot of developers seem to view Wii/PSP/PS2 as a good multi-platform group.

PSP is never going to beat DS, but it could still be a viable platform.

I agree completely, CM.  I think the Gamecube is a good comparison - in fact, it has a very similarly sized install base.  It will never have the depth of library that the DS has, but it will continue to get titles, especially, like you say, Wii / PS2 / PSP multi-platform releases.

On an off note, I just got a PSP and I think it gets a bum rap.  It's certainly no DS, and there are definitely a lot of inexplicable design decisions that went into it, but if you can get passed its drawbacks there's definitely fun to be had.  Especially since I never had a PS2, I don't mind the port-tastic library as much as most people.  It's nice to be able to catch up on games I missed while I'm on the train everyday.

Yeah. The PSP is basically a lot of stuff done right, with a couple things done wrong, but not too many. The BIG problems with it are fundamental though: price and the very concept it's based on, sadly.

I knew the psp wasn't doing as badly as most people said. This 750k for monster hunter is about equal to NA's GTA. Japan has it's one hit wonder and NA has it's one hit wonder, with i'm sure, a hand full of titles doing decently well (portable ops and madden come to mind, but i know theres more).

Anyway, what would really be intresting is to see how bad the PS3 really fairs. Alot of people have said that if PS3 does bad enough, PSP will get the Axe. I say, If the PS3 does bad enough, the PSP is going to end up being Sony's crutch.

No hardware yet, but I do have an early software sales report for next weeks chart.
Quote

Gundam Musou(PS3) nearly sold all 150k first shipment, next shipment is on next week.
Super Robot War W should sold all 250k shipment during weekend, next shipment is the end of March :/ !!??
Also, MHP2, SimCity DS and Layton are still selling. The latter 2 are in shortage. Layton will restock in weekend and SimCity needs to wait 2 weeks....

This cartridge shortage thing is getting a little out of control. Either Nintendo needs to find more plastic, open another cartidge factory, out-source some of the workload and/or 3rd parties and retailers need to place much larger orders for these games Consumers need to learn how to pre-order so that the correct amount of games are ordered and none of this 2-4weeks to restock non-sense.

If I had just released a game that had sold much faster than expected, I would be pissed if Nintendo told me I had to wait 4WEEKS to get more stock in stores. I could've just missed my window to sell more games and profit enough to expand my developments. 4 weeks later my game could have been forgotten about or lost in the shuffle of NEW games being released. I hope they work this out before DQIX is released.

I wonder how PSP is doing for Sony?  Are they still losing money on the hardware?  Are they earning that back on the software?  Those are the things that will decide if it gets axed or not, PS3 probably doesn't matter.

If PS3 keeps doing poorly...I don't know.  I think cutting the generation short by popping out a new console would be a definite possibility, but it depends on how stubborn Sony is about winning the Blu-ray war.  Maybe they'll continue to support PS2 more vigorously than expected or maybe they'll try to put out a brand new "third pillar" console with no Blu-ray?  And probably some more motion sensing stuff.

Well, one thing Sony understands well, and I think they've proven this with both Playsations, is that they understand how to design consoles that will eventually be cheap to manufacture.  My understanding is that, like the PS3, Sony took a loss on each PS2 towards the beginning, but by the end they were making a fair bit of profit on each one.

It would shock me if after manufacturing 25 million of them that they'd still be taking a loss on the PSP.  Their losses will gradually subside on the PS3 as well.

That may be true, but think about how much money Sony will be losing by then.  Not to mention inflation and the time value of money.  (gotta love finance class!)

I don't think thats called designing a consoles well, its just called designing a console.  Hardware gets cheaper to manufacture over time and it has been true for every system.

Not only that, but the PS2 was also massively successful from the get-go, so the trade-offs over time between money lost due to unit production vs money gained due to expanding userbase is not necessarily the same for the PS3 in this age.

Not true at all.  Every recent console that wasn't by Nintendo or Sony has sold at a loss for its lifetime.  The Saturn, Dreamcast, and Xbox - all sold at a loss for their entire lifetimes.

Nintendo's different because they always sell at a profit from day one.  Maybe it isn't designing a console well, but it's at least understanding manufacturing really well.  Of course, Sony's vertically integrated so they have an advantage over everyone else in that regard.
