Er, maybe, but if the PSP is any indicator of what will happen, they'll lose those publishers, too.

Some studios scaled back but most axed UMD support entirely, saying the discs just weren't selling at all and as such they couldn't justify even bothering to make them anymore. Likewise, major retailers are either scaling back or dropping UMD, with Wal-Mart dropping them completely.

I don't see why BluRay will be any different as both BluRay and UMD have just about everything in common: they both only work on a system no one owns, they both have questionable support (and UMD support was actually better), and they're both unnecessary.

Blu-Ray is in even worse shape than Betamax was. At least Beta had better quality than did VHS, but BluRay costs more and has worse quality than HD-DVD. HD-DVD may have less room, but how many yottabytes does one movie need?

Of course, you aren't factoring in the fact that the only bluray player on the market has faulty video decompression algorithms in it and that the first spec sheet had to use mpeg2 video compression whereas starting with discs releasing September and later will use VC1 compression and much MUCH better players will be available such as the Pioneer Elite BD player.

This fight has just started.  Bluray has more studios behind it and more hardware companies making the players than hd-dvd.  They won't start jumping ship until long after all the bugs have been worked out.  This fight will last at least another 2-3 years I think and eventually make both formats obsolete anyways.

The fact, the umd format was fated to fail because it could only be played on a psp, whereas bluray and hd-dvd will be played on game consoles, stand alone players and in computers.  Support will not waiver as fast as it did for umd.

HD DVD will absolutely dominate Blue-ray, by it's branding alone. Think about it, DVD is the standard now, the next step is the progression of DVD, when a TYPICAL consumer is looking to step up to the next format, they're going to think "what in the mother f*** is a Blue-ray? Do I need a Blue-ray TV? I'm an idiot", and instantly recognize HD DVD as High Definition DVD, to go with their HDTV.

Damn this is topic is off course...Guess I'd better be cool and contribute to the madness.

Currently, I'd imagine HD-DVD is positioned to be a much more likely successor to DVD.  Not only does it have current branding with the "DVD" name, but current players cost half as much as Blu Ray players.  Which will a consumer choose when the movies cost the same amount, yet the players are differentiated by $500?

Either way, the format wars will be a dud.  There won't be a winner as consumers just switched to DVD's a couple of years ago.  VHS lasted 20 something years, and people just got finished purchasing all their old movies on the new format.  Most do not have the equipment to take advantage of the extra features either way.  The DVD will be replaced by holographic tech like the HMD tech.
Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I think the branding hurt it more then it helps especially know.  When you go and ask about HD-DVD player you have to Specify "A player that plays the new HD-DVD format"  like that.  Even then people get confused.  The Term HD-DVD player was already used for DVD players that upscaled and the like.  It's an excepted term.  Sounds good on paper but Blu-ray you either know what I'm talking about or you huh and I explain it to you.  No ambiquity everyones on the same page there.  I personally was surprised by this observation.  Especially when I found it didn't matter how technoliterate you were for the ambiquity to be their.  On a related note if they keep messing up players or bring over bad transfers and have no movies where it matters, I'm looking at both of you HD-DVD and Blu-ray.  They might as well just stop know and wait.  Film transfer isn't a new art they should be able to do better.  I'm holding off verdict till I see gen 2 players.

Quoted for truth. Honestly, did none of the industries learn anything from the Laserdisc situation? (...ignoring Japan, where they took off due to being cheaper than VHS tapes)

Australian Software Sales Charts for August 6th, maybe this thread will get back on track? Highly unlikely though.

XBOX360 just isnt selling here, most games (apart from day 1 new releases) are already available for $79 AUD, about $50 USD,  (at JB HiFi) and has achieved what the GCN could not do in  killing XBOX sales as well.

I believe DS first/second shipment of DS-Lite sold out, as EB games are advertising New shipment of DS-Lite has arrived, DS-Lite back in stock. This is also supported by the fact that older DS titles are climbing back up. This plus the fact that 2 titles are still in the top 10 after many weeks is amazing for this country. And EB are also moving DS to the front of the store.

Any Australians care to comment on Nintendo's marketing for the DS down there?  Is the advertising getting better or is the DS succeeding purely on its own awesomeness?

DS-Lite and Brain Training were advertised extensively in peak hr adult TV and also during breakfast shows for about 2 weeks. All adds have now stopped, I think Nintendo wanted to get the message out to Adults that they have games for them.

Not exactly, we got close to zero adds here fore the gamecube. There may have been one or two during some kids shows, but I never saw them.
The adss they did for the DS would not have been cheap. Sponsering the top quiz show at 7PM for 2 weeks would be expensive.

NSMB is set to break 3mil in about 4-5 weeks and BT2 is set to do it in about 2-3 weeks. AC continues to fall but Tamagochi is til selling strong.

p.s. DS Lite continues to sell out every shipment in Japan, Nintendo cannot produce enough units fast enough.

Overall hardware sales were up 25% y/y counting current and next gen consoles and handheld sales. 128-bit hardware sales were down 33% y/y in July. PS2 unit sales were down 22% y/y, GCN down 13% and Xbox down 47%. This brings the install base of 128-bit consoles to approximately 60 million in the U.S. The Xbox 360 sold 207K units versus 277K in June, with a strong life-to-date tie ratio of 4.61. Combined Xbox and Xbox 360 software increased 44% y/y. We expect Xbox 360 hardware sales to pick up in August with the release of EA’s Madden NFL 2007.

edit: For those that don't know, NPD #'s are ranked by $$$ made by sale, so that would mean that NSMB DS costing $34.99 in 3rd place vs NCAA 360 @ $59.99 in second place and NCAA PS2 @ $49.99 at 1st place, more than likely puts NSMB in 1st place by units sold since it cost $25.00 less that the 360 game and is only one place lower in the rankings.

Simple, it plays PS2 games. Its also possible (but less likely due to price of Wii) that the PS2 has such momentum that it will still continue to outsell all next gen systems. I think Sony is hoping that is the case until they can reduce the PS3 to a reasonable price.
