"I thought that maybe this would be a good place to ask for suggestions? I would like to focus on earler, less CGI-based games than some of the modern ones, and I don't think that studying any more than 6-7 games would a realistic goal."

Check out Super Mario RPG.  I personally consider it one of the top three games I've ever played in my entire life.  That game is perfect marriage of RPG and realtime action game design.  It has a lot of exploration and gameplay yet unlike Paper Mario the story is pretty good too.  It's just such a user friendly RPG and it has no random battles either.  And most important of all unlike most RPGs where I feel like I'm watching in Super Mario RPG I feel like I'm playing.  There are no situations where I feel I'm held back by a dumb restriction or that my button presses are telling the character to do something instead of actually controlling him.

I need to play Mario RPG.  I've never been a big RPG fan, but that game seems very good.  Some things I dislike about RPGs so much, especially with Final Fantasy, are random battles and the blandness of the game.  I've never played any of those games, but my friends have, and I've watched.  I swear, for having not played any Final Fantasy games, I probably know a lot more about them than a lot of people who have.  But they seem like such drawn out, tasteless, and ultimately uncreative games.

I might play FFVII and VI, but those are the only ones.  But Mario RPG I should play, and maybe Earthbound and Chrono Trigger.

Or not.  We'll see.  But Mario RPG definitely seems like a good suggestion, from what I've seen.  And for not having played it, I've seen a lot.

A game Square-Enix should learn from is Anachronox (if they ignore the bugs). So much better than Final Fantasy...

It's a crime Mario RPG was never released in PAL territories. It's a prefect candidate to port too, le sigh, I allready spent many dollars (more like silver points, thanks Gato) getting Chronotrigger to play on my PAL snes, I can't really afford Mario RPG in the face of all the new games coming out ;___;

;_____________;oh what? PAL angst in this thread

i like the list of rpgs you have going- but i would definately suggest any game by tri-ace
personally i think they are the best rpg developer out there right now- they have so many fresh ideas for rpgs including great battle systems- i would definately look into star ocean (snes), star ocean the second story (ps1) and valkyrie profile (ps1) all three of those are great unique rpgs- all have great battle systems, music, graphics- you name it- i always figured that a great battle system makes a great rpg- i would also suggest chrono trigger, any tales game, and earthbound
i call the big one bitey.

FFVII (I haven't, to my shame, played this yet, but I hear good things about it. If it's too similar to FFVI I won't bother with it.)

It does have a few similarities, but not enough to really detract from it.  That said, FFVI blows it out of the water .

As for me, has anyone else played the Panzer Dragoon games?  Especially Panzer Dragoon Saga?  One of the absolute best RPGs that I've ever played =).

I just found out about Anachronox two days ago for the first time, but all I know about it is that it is an futuristic rpg.  It was one of the games that came from Ion Storm, the company John Romero started in the mid/late 90's in Texas.  I had heard about how he splurged on this new company and the place was like a Trump building.  Anyways the story is a very great read regarding things that happen in the industry, and it focuses on the game Daikatana's development, it's over 20 pages to read but I highly recommend it, heres the link Behind the Games special.  If the other Behind the Game's stories are as good as this, I can't wait to read them all.  Time to read about Anachronox and the other Ion Storm game Dominion i think it was called?  Oh, and has anyone ever played the N64 version of Daikatana or seen it?

As for mildly recent games that were overlooked...
- Rally Cross 1 (PS1) was a gem of a racing game, unfortunately Rally Cross 2 was pathetic.
- Wrestlemania the Arcade Game (ARC, PS1, SAT, SNES, GEN?, N64?) was the best wrestling title I ever played, it was more like a fighting game, and I'm not a wrestling fan, I don't know how well its aged though.  I would recommend getting the PS1 version, that's the one I played.
- Revolution X was another overlooked game, in the arcade only though...
- Dirt Trax FX for the SNES, one of the last games to use the FX chip, very rare.
- Waverace Blue Storm, still the best wave racing game, period.
- Vandal Hearts 2 (PS1), Vagrant Story (PS1), Daytona USA (DC).
- Burning Rangers for the Saturn was supposed to be awesome, it was one of the last games to come out and I'm pretty sure it was made by the same team who made Nights.
- Panzer Dragoon Saga as Mumei said, I never played it, but those who have claim it's one of the best games of all time.

Underdogs on Anachronox.

Make sure to get the latest patch (1.02 build 46 or something) before playing, the game suffers from major bugs. The patch offers to circumvent the CD copy protection, use it, it will save you from a few crashes. I feel sorry for the people who bought it on launch day... If patched it's pretty stable.

Aliens vs Predator - Arcade
Simpsons - Arcade
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The one where they go back in time for the SNes

You know a lot of games seem to have take a step backward when it comes to beat'em up games.  Hunter, Spawn Armageddon, Dead to Rights, etc

Jaws for the NES.  I haven't beaten it but I thought it was addictive.  Just keep getting shells hurting jaws and his babies once in a while and getting somewhat more powerful in a way was addicting.

The Adventures of Dizzy was an awesome game.

HC, earlier I believe you here thinking of this game. But it was for NES, not genesis.

You were this egg who had to rescue his family and friends from various evil spells and could only carry three items at a time. It was a long and sometimes difficult platformer, but one of the best NES games I've played.

Also, Ice Climbers for the NES. My sister and I used to play that all of the time. It's come out for Gameboy Advance recently, but I'm not paying $20 for it. . .

And a game called North and South for NES. Good times were had with that as well.

An oldie but happy for me would have to be The Adventure of Joe and Mac....that game was the best when I was little.  Me and my brother would play that game like mad trying to get our cave babes back.  Another one was Uniracers.  This game might have been well known at the time, but now it's just like "Were you on drugs!?!? IT'S NOT HARDCORE LIKE GTA 3!! LOL AHAHAH!! LOL"  Bah!  Well those are my additions

Uniracers = 10
Adventure of Joe and Mac = 10

cool, thanks!  Ya Jaws for Nes was extremely addictive, my friend had it I didnt, but I always loved to play it, borrowed it, and dreamed of killing Jaws.  Simpsons arcade too, me and my friends spent hordes of quarters to beat it many times while my friends mom sat in a chair, I never understood why Konami didn't port it to any other system ever or why noone bought the rights to port it, instead we got crap simpsons games for years and none have equaled the arcade game yet, not even hit n run.  Heres more info about the Simpsons Arcade Game and HOW TO GET THE PC VERSION supposedly without a separate emulator program.SIMPSONS ARCADE GAME

The TMNT games were great, I played TMNT 1 and 2, never got to play Turtles in Time, but I will one day once I get time to fire up the rom.

Joe and Mac was a fun game too, I bought it as part of a 3 pack of snes games at Sams Club, that included Congos Caper and Firepower 2000.  Congos Caper is very much like Joe and Mac... BTW has anyone played the sequel to Joe and Mac?  I never got to that one.

Simpsons - Arcade

Ohhh, I rememebr being a little kid and playing that for hours. I loved it. The high-score board faultered under the lofty heights of my feared initials -CCM - until they were wiped every two weeks. My main problem with it was that you could just pour coinage into it and keep on going, so the high-score table was a little redundant anyway. I remember now; people used to fool the machine with Fijian 20c coins that are equivilent in weight to our $2 ones here, and so they eventually took it away. Bastards.
