Let's put it like that: The kiddies will use their mom's credit card, anyway, so an age detection based on that would be pointless.

Also, pedos are a major problem with child-oriented online services. Especially with Pokemon a pedo could suggest he wants to trade Pokemon with the child.

It would be good on the DS. I would not mind at all paying a small fee like a fiver a month to play a Pokemon MMO as long as the world was huge.

Children won't pay a monthly fee since their allowance is too small and they can't make such payments, anyway. Parents won't pay the monthly fee without a lot of convincing, either. Charging for a Pokemon MMO would be alienating the core audience. Besides, in Japan playing Pokemon online (via wireless adapter + hotspot) is free.
