Donkey Konga importers come here!
« on: February 18, 2004, 01:21:05 PM »
'Lo.  On short notice, my father is being called to Japan for a few weeks on business (we live in TX).  As I've seen on the import banners on PGC, Donkey Konga is fairly cheap, and as far as I know, it's easy to understand without any knowledge of Japanese.  Oh, and as close to DDR as any Nintendo gamer's ever going to get So I was going to ask my dad if he could pick up a copy while he's there.  But I understand Japanese games don't work on American home consoles...so then I here about FreeLoader.  Will someone explain how that works?  And if, by any chance, any Japanese person is reading this, could you reply with the MSRP of Donkey Konga (yen would be fine, USD is preferable)?  Thanks a lot!  I'm going to shut up now, The Simpsons is starting.

1) Stick FreeLoader in GC
2) Follow onscreen instructions to play Japanese game
3) Put in game

Very, very simple...Just read the instructions given to you...

Cheapest price I've seen is 35 dollars, or around 3800 yen, I believe...

Cool.  So, is that like on Ebay, or Japanese retailers/importers?  Oh, and could someone tell me if there's an option for English VA/text?  Thanks tons.

Actually, the FreeLoader is part of the GC Action Replay that has been in stores for quite a while...But you might just want to purchase the separate one...(Just look on any online game supplier)

And the FL doesn't translate the text for you...

I think I misunderstood you...I thought the price was for DK I was talking about an option in the game itself.  Sorry for the confusion.

There are save issues with DK and Freeloader on PAL machines. So you may not be able to save accumulated points without performing a hardware mod.

Thanks for the heads-up Renny, but I'm using a North American NTSC machine.  That should be all right, I'm assuming...and Bill, Lik-Sang sells Free Loader sepparate from Action Replay.

The fact that it's NTSC isn't related to MC formatting, though. I think EU/PAL and NA files can actually coexist on a card.  But JP saves are formatted differently and require their own card, or they can rely on Freeloader to format them to save on a EU/NA card. But some games won't work with Freeloader, even with an empty, JP-formatted card. I wonder if Nintendo is attempting to curb Freeloader usage.

Well, DreamMix TV World Fighters can only create its save on a formatted card, but you can copy the save to another card with PAL saves and it still works. DK might have mechanisms to block this, but unless measures are taken by the dev against it you can keep PAL and JAP saves on one card.
Doesn't sound weird that N is blocking imports, considering they don't want us to play games they haven't "approved" for us.

Well you can go to www.gamefaqs.com, I think they have a translation guide there. Anyways there is no saving when you use the freeloader, the game just doesn't save or load.

Is it possible to save if you import a Japanesse memory card?  Or are all memory cards the same?

And does anyone know some good sites to buy imported games besides Ebay?

All memory cards are the same, but you will need to have an Import online memory card, you cannot mix the files. And just so you know, you will need a modified GC to save Donkey Konga files. With a FreeLoader, Donkey Konga will just reformat your import memory card, erasing any other files on it. I don't know why Donkey Konga does this, but it and Mr. Driller: Drill Land are the only GC imports I know of that aren't compatible with FreeLoader.

So, what's the best answer to importing Donkey Konga if you're just stick with Action Replay's Freeloader?

STRIKEROBI'S DONKEY KONGA IMPORT GUIDE

Will you be using a Freeloader to play it?
If yes, don't import this game, you can't save your progress.

Did you do the smart thing and mod your system instead?
If yes, go hog wild.

Got Donkey Konga 2 today.  I don't jack about Freeloader problems, but if you have a real mod, go ahead and import this sucka.
