Where's Chrono and Mario?
« on: June 08, 2004, 10:16:10 AM »
There are 2 games on it that are needed in my collection: Chrono Trigger and Mario RPG. I do not want to pay 80.00 for each of them, many people are die-hard fans of the games, so what is stopping Nintendo to port them on GBA?!?!?!

Nintendo has no control over porting Chrono Trigger since it's a Square game.  Plus it is available on the Playstation.  Sure you might not have a system that plays it but enough do that Square probably doesn't feel it's worth porting.  Super Mario RPG in theory should be available for porting since I assume Nintendo owns it and I agree that it should be ported.  However Nintendo seems to only port titles like Super Mario World that every Nintendo fan in the world already owns.  Aside from A Link to the Past they haven't really ported any rare titles that people actually want ported.

It's probably for the best anyway since Nintendo has f*cked up EVERY port they've released on the GBA by adding annoying voice samples and dumbing down the difficulty.  Even if Super Mario RPG was released on the GBA it would have all sorts of annoying "whee hee!" voice samples thrown in.

A local game store in my town as of Saturday had a copy of Super Mario RPG for sale for $30 Canadian.  I could probably buy it for you if you want.  PM me if you're interested.

I wouldn't call A Link to the Past rare, as it is one of the best known games of all time, and is regarded as the pinnacle of 2D games by many. And I have not noticed that Mario ports have been dumbed down. Aren't they direct ports of the Super Mario All stars series, with some added "bonuses" such as the annoying voices.

Square is making remakes of the first 2 Final Fantasy games, do you guys know anything about the release dates for those 2 games?

It's not obscure but in terms of finding a used SNES copy for a decent price it was rare.  There were a lot of copies made but few people part with them thus making it hard to find and thus worth porting.  Super Metroid is a very popular game as well but it too would be considered rare these days due to the difficulty in obtaining a used copy.

I think it might be a bit difficult to port Super Mario RPG because Square seems to own the rights to some portions of the game, such as Geno (see Mario & Luigi credits).  Still, I bet Nintendo could convince Square Enix to let it port the game if it really wanted to.
That's my opinion, not yours.
