The Oregon Trail
« on: May 19, 2004, 07:34:51 PM »
Has anyone else played this game?  I had totally forgotten about it until I saw it listed on some website.  It was simple but had it's charm.  I first played it on an Apple computer.  Apparently there have been many sequels to this game.  Has anyone played any of the sequels?  I never have, but I'd love to give them a try.  I also saw something that said the original Oregon Trail idea was from 1974, that was surprising, maybe it was a text and picture game back then given the style of game it is.  Please share your nostalgic thoughts and what you consider to be the best version if you've played many.  Thanks

Most depressing game ever?

The first time you played Oregon Trail.

"Wow! I can name people. Let's see..." and then you fill in the names of all your immediate relatives and best friends.

Before you even leave town, Indians attack your wagon. Lil' Joey and Annie die, screaming as they struggle to pull the arrows out of their throats. Mom is paralyzed from the waist down, and horribly disfigured.

Then you tried to ford the river. Jesus Christ, what the HELL were you thinking.
Yeah, I played the original thoroughly back in school, and then had one of the super remakes with multiple character types and ****.

My favorite part was shooting 11289 pounds of meat and only being able to bring back like 200.

There was a time when this was my favourite game.  That was back before I had a game-worthy PC or a console and I never had money for the arcade and thus only got to play educational games on my school's Apples.  This would have been around 1988 or so.

I remember it was pretty fun.  I would intentionally name my party after people in my class that bugged me and then took pleasure in watching them die horrific deaths.  Yeah in retrospect that was pretty f*cked up.  I never got to Oregon though.  Was there any way to get across the river?  No matter what option I chose it seemed like I was always f*cked.

HAHAHA I tottally forgot about the shooting animal parts, wow take that Cabella's Deer Hunter!  That brings back memories!  SUPER was the sequels as good as the original?
1988 sounds about right, there was a way to get across the river, out of I think the 3 options any of them could be successful depending on the other variables in play.  As far as the big river at the end though I forget but I did beat the game atleast once and saw others make it (I add not often).  Man I think I'm gonna buy one of the sequels.

Those were a huge part of my younger computer gaming days.  Combined with Dr. Quandry's(SP?) Island, and Dino Park.  I wonder if I still have those laying around...

Oh man, I loved this game. Back when I had a crappy Mac, this and Amazon Trail (which rocks too) were the only games I played. Buffalo shooting ruled.
