Casltevania on Cube!?
« on: March 29, 2004, 09:47:49 PM »
Its seems IGN Cube has posted a rumor that Kuju will be developing an original Castlevania title for Gamecube. It seems Kuju has a partnership with Konami also well. What does everyone think of this if its true? Here is the link Castlevania?

Sounds promising.  I'm a long-time fan of the franchise, thru the good and the not-so-good.  I still like the N64 Castlevania(s) more than Lament of Innocence (aka "meh").

I'll buy this one either way.

I think that IGN's probably full of crap (as usual).

Kuju is apparently owned by Nintnedo, and is supposedly making some sort of GameCube-exclusive product. And they apparently recently signed up to do something with Konami.

But if this Kuju executive says "Castlevania to GameCube!!" on a message board, is he announcing a game, or just saying what he wants (like Nintendo saying "Mario for President!!"). It's obvious that people at Kuju probably like Konami, and Nintendo, as they've hooked themselves up with both of them, apparently.

So yeah, if it's true, it's good news. But I'm quick to believe that IGN is full of crap. But I also know that they're in a good position, and are often privy to details that the rest of us don't get to know.

As for my thoughts on this potential Castlevania, I hope it's a remake of SotN, not LoI. Like how MGS:TTS was a remake of MGS, not MGS2.

Either that, or something all-new. I really don't care if it's not "made by Igarashi", as Konami seems to have severely burned their credibility with that stuff. "Castlevania 64 sucked. But that's because I didn't make it. So I'm gonna wipe it from the 'official Castlevania history'. And Castlevania Legends too. Because it let you play as a girl. Boys don't want to play as girls. They want 'cool' heroes. Not girls. So Lament of Innocence is going to be the first 'real' 3D Castlevania, and it's also the 'real' origin of Castlevania." Sorry Iga, but when you say stuff like that, your game has to actually be better than the ones you're stepping on.

Where did you that piece?  Sites reported Nintendo signed a deal with Kuju to develop an exclusive game.  Not bought 'em.

Yeah, you're right. Just a "development deal" for now.

I think I got it confused with the rumor that <_<  >_> Nintendo is going to announce at E3 that they've aquired Zoonami as a "second party" developer.

Castlevania really only works well in 2D so I'm rather indifferent to the idea of a Cube Castlevania.  Odds are pretty good it would be in 3D.  Nintendo fans already get the best Castlevania games anyway on the GBA so what does it matter if the Cube has any Castlevania titles?  Buy a GB Player and you're set.

And how could anyone remake Symphony of the Night?  It's graphics and sound are dead-on and don't need to be updated like MGS' did.  The best I could see is if they translated the Saturn version into English and then released it in a compilation with Mondo of Blood which also has never been released here.  Think of it as the Castlevania equivalent of Final Fantasy Anthology.

So what if it was girl, one of my favorite games has a girl as a main character, does that mean its not a good game. Girls can be just as cool as guys, it all depends on how they are portrayed in the game.

Funny how the guy bashes the concept of having a female main character when Metroid has a female lead and the current Castlevania games are basically Metroid games with vampires.

Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

The cancelled "Castlevania: Ressurection" for Dreamcast had the same female lead, Sonia Belmont -- Trevor Belmont's mother, and I was really really looking forward to it despite the warped storyline.  Silly Igarashi.  Castlevania Legends, Sonia's first appearance, had a cool story concept cuz it tells how Sonia hooked up with Alucard to get the Belmont line going.  Whatever it was that happened in Lament of Innocence.... "MEH."

sp correction:  Rondo of Blood.

Another weird thing, only the N64 Castlevanias had a "real" presence of vampires, especially as regular enemies, and did not have the Metroid level design.  Most of the others games were "I am DRACULA, I am THE ONLY VAMPIRE in this castle HAR HAR HAR."

And I do think a remake of Symphony is feasible.  It would be another 2.5D sidescroller which all the layers and sprites replaced by highly detailed 3D models w/ bump mapping and shadowing.  Since you're using 3D models, you could add cutscenes and possibly replace those multiple instances of horrible voice acting (I admit, they have a place in my heart).

"Die monster!"

"Have at you!"

"No!  It cannot be!  NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!"

"What is it to a man if he gains the world and loses his own soul?  Lisa, forgive me.  Farewell, my son!"

Holy crap, someone doesn't know me... ^_^  I will always choose the female character no matter what...If I get to choose who is in my party in an RPG, I will have at least a majority of the female characters...I chose a female character for Animal Crossing...And now I'm waiting to see if the "For Girls" version of Harvest Moon gets released...

A Castlevania game for GCN would be excellent.  A good game to actually deserver a possibly Mature rating.  Would sell well and would bring some darker themes to the system.  I love colorful games as much or more than anyone, but it is nice to play a darker title sometimes.

I think you misunderstood. The part in the quotes in my post wasn't what I was saying. It was words that I was sticking into the mouth of Koji Igarashi (Castlevania's current producer).

Here, I found the interview I was thinking about.
http://www.gamers.com/news/1368742

Quote

EGM: Would you make a Castlevania with a female main character?

IGA: Hm, there are difficult problems with that. As a gamer, I think that you become one with the character, and since Castlevania has a lot of male players, it's natural to have male characters. In Rondo of Blood, Maria was a silly, cute aside, but you still had Richter to make it serious. Plus, Mr. Hagihara (the director) had a playful sense of humor. He worked on Symphony as well, and he made the telescope part where, if you pan over to the left you can see a little mouse, and also where Alucard can sit down on the chair and prop his feet up.

EGM: After Tomb Raider, don't you think a female character is more acceptable?

IGA: It's possible I guess. Although, I purposefully left the Sonia Belmont character (from Castlevania: Legends for GBC) out of the official Castlevania chronology. (laughs) Usually, the vampire storyline motifs, females tend to be sacrificed. It's easier to come up with weak, feminine characters. I'll think about it more in the future, though. It's tough to fit a female hero into the early history of Castlevania, but as you move into the modern day, females can then more easily become a hero.

Gee, Igarashi, thanks for the lack of effort in creating female characters.  Thanks for the lame story in LoI that DOESN'T EVEN HAVE DRACULA.  Thanks for the AWEFUL 3D MECHANICS in LoI.  LoI is also one of the smallest games in the series.  Meh.

Put Hagihara-san back in the driver's seat, with KCEK as the developer (N64 Castlevanias, GBA Castlevanias).  Igarashi's gone nuts.

It should be pointed out that Kuju have flatly denied that they're making a Castlevania game for the GameCube.

Personally, i think a 3d castlevania could work, if they dind't try to radically change the formula.  With enough effort, they could possibly do a zelda or metroid caliber update to the series.  (However, they've failed 4 times already =/ )

likewise, i'm expecting the next castlevania game on the PSP or DS.

I thought they failed 2.5 times.

a) Lament of Innocence, which didn't do a lot of important things well (platforming, level design/variety, camera, menus, story tie-in, etc).
b) N64 Castlevanias I count as 1.5 games, since one's an update to the former.  These I found much easier to digest (I did enjoy them) than LoI because they were built off the platforming roots of the classic Castlevanias, with cool platforming challenges.  Music and enemy numbers/placement is where I'd make the key improvements in.
