Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes custom DVD case cover
« on: March 11, 2004, 04:56:30 PM »
If you're like me, you just got Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes and are loving it. Also, if you're like me, you found the cover art to be somewhat...lacking (okay, I thought it sucked. A render of the characters, yay, how original).
So, I decided to make my own cover and have it printed out at Officemax, and replaced it. I thought people here might like to check it out, and if they like it enough print it out to replace their own copy's DVD case insert.
Here's the preview image:
http://www.shingallon.com/TS_my_cover.jpg
And here's the printable-quality jpg (warning: it's BIG, 300 dpi, so it'll look nice when printed).

Hope you all like it, any comments are appreciated!

Heh- you used the cover art I was hoping Konami would use. I have to say, though, it looks great- if I can get myself some photoquality paper I'll probably be using it with my copy of Twin Snakes when I get it. Good work!

Whoa! Is that for real!
Thats mighty impressive there Shin!

There was one 'flaw' i noticed though - is the Silicon Knights logo meant to be fuzzy like that?

But I will definitely save this and print it off!

That was the clearest I could manage to get the scan, and couldn't find a good high-res version online anywhere...if anyone knows where a good high quality jpg of the Silicone Knights logo is, I'll use that and edit my cover a bit.
Glad you guys like it, I tend to do that kind of thing as a hobby (being a graphic design major, I get a little irritated when I look at game covers and can only think "I can do better than that!")

I just got a printout from OfficeMax and put it in the case... it looks really wonderful printed out, especially on a nice laser printer like they have.

Very nice work on that...I would have preferred them using the reed pen art, because it suits Metal Gear Solid so much more.  If only I had a good means of printing that out...

Well the guys chucked a hissy fit over my accidental 'linking' of the image in my post, so just ask Mario

I thought we could just simply copy/paste the URL. Why does it turn into a link, and not stay as unlinked text?

In the reply field there's a checkbox "autoparse URLs". Disable that.

Why does it matter if it's linked or unlinked?

If it's unlinked and broken up (with a space) it's no longer a link and the site's owner has no responibility for the "link", as opposed to a real link. Cube-Europe, Nintendo of Europe and Slashdot enforce this (though Slashdot has a Link-tag which DOES place a link).

Ah, that makes sense, then. Why should it matter with what Termin8 did, though?  Was it a violation of PGC's rule of no direct linking to images?

Yes, he linked to the actual image, a .jpg file. It doesn't matter if the link was clickable or not.

Anyway, here's the PAL boxart, which is far superior to the US boxart.

It looks good, but a bit too redish.......due to the fact Nintendo's & Konami's logo are red also.

Actually, One neat thing I like about the US cover is that Metal Gear is in the background, like it overshadows all... or uhh whatever.

So thats what most of that coloring is.  It just looked like random shading to me *shurgs*.  But now that I see it, it does look cool, though they could have made it stand out more, but it would defeat some of the "shock" element of Metal Gear in the game.

Shin, you are my hero.  ^_^
*bows to the might of shin*

EDIT: I think my printer hates me. I told it to print your good version and it did it too small. My printer makes me very angry. It must die. It did this to me before with an alternate REmake cover. Maybe i told it to crop the image to fit the page. Hm...

I like this front better but I like the back of the official one much more. I really like the "Classic Metal. New Gear." catchprhase. It also breaks form from the standard GameCube back. The accessory icons are at the bottom instead of the top. I think I'll just use the front, and probably the spine too.

I've always felt that the accessories icons should be at the bottom instead of the top corner, which takes space away from the back that could be better used for the actual back.
And I hated that stupid "Classic Metal, New Gear" line ; )

If you're having trouble printing it, set your printer to think that it's printing on a bigger paper size than 8.5x11, and tell it to "print to edge" if you can...if you crop the image it'll be meaningless because it won't fit right : /
I took the full-size image to Officemax on a CD and it printed perfectly: Clean, crisp, and it looks totally official (unless I tell people, they think it's the real cover art) and it fits the case.
