By popular demand of the other games writer from Halifax, Nova Scotia: are we going to get a Genesis update soon?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/77807/three-original-game-boy-games-to-be-added-to-nintendo-classics-library

A trio of classic Game Boy titles will be added to the library for basic Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on Tuesday (Monday in North America), joining the GBA update earlier this month for subscribers to the Expansion Pack.

  • Revenge of the 'gator (1989/90) is an early pinball game for the Game Boy. Developed by HAL Laboratory, the general objective is to avoid the titular alligator for as long as possible, and the original released offered a 2 player mode via the Link Cable. It was previously released on the 3DS Virtual Console in 2013, though without multiplayer support.
  • Avenging Spirit (1992) from Jaleco is a stage-based side scrolling platformer in which the player (who in the original arcade game was shot to death by a crime syndicate, and is a ghost) possess enemies to locate keys and defeat bosses. It was a 2011 3DS VC release.
  • Mole Mania (1996/97) is a Nintendo-developed overhead puzzle game which credits Shigeru Miyamoto as its producer. Playing as a mole, the goal is to move a black ball from stage to stage, using the ability to go underground to your advantage. It was released on the 3DS VC in 2012.

Oh, those are all actually really good games...

I'm not sure how well Revenge of the Gator holds up against newer digital pinball offerings. It's pretty simple, and with a single table to play through (with multiple levels and bonus games) there isn't a ton of variety... But the design is solid and still plays really well. Worth checking out for pinball fans!

Avenging Spirit is super weird. You are a ghost, who can (in fact, must) find bodies to inhabit during your quest to save your girlfriend from the gang that killed you. The body swapping is interesting, as you can always choose to abandon your current host for a different body - but your spirit power will rapidly fade when outside a host. Every body has different abilities (speed, jumping, attack) also, which means there is room to experiment with different approaches. I liked it a lot as an oddball game to pick up and play.

Mole Mania is a puzzle design with a lot of heart, and stands up just as well today as it did when released. It might remind you of Sokoban "push the block" style puzzles, but with two vertical layers to work with and a charming story, it stands out from the crowd. A hidden gem, for sure!
