Topic: Still a good time to get a GameCube?

The $99.00 Zelda bundle has me very interested in getting a GameCube, but I was wondering if it's still a good time to get one?  Are companies still going to make a lot of games for the GameCube? Does Nintendo still have plans to release some exclusives for it or do you think they'll wait and start designing games for their next system? I'm just curious to know if you think the current GameCube system still has a lot of life left in it.  Thanks!

it's never a bad time to pick up a gamecube.

new gamecube exlsives include viewtiful joe, mark kart: double dash, metroid prime, legend of zelda: wind waker, and a boat load of others i'm too lazy to think of right now.

there are plenty of gamecube only games coming out in the near future, including metal gear: twin snakes, final fantasy: crystal chronicals, baten kaitos, resident evil 4, killer 7, metroid prime 2, new legend of zelda game and a bunch of others.

well, it was pretty well answered with his ^^^^ response.  but, i'll elaborate my point of view as well.

YES!  yes, yes, and YES!  even if you were to suppose that all developers halted any and all development on gamecube games, hell, even if nintendo did too - the $99 bundle pack is more than worth it jsut for the games that are already out.  if you havent had the awesome pleasure of playing through metroid prime, the adrenaline rush of mario kart, the shocking eye candy of resident evil, or the psychological teaser of eternal darkness - than you are missing out.  the only cure for that disease would be to whip out that $100 and get cracking.  

BUY THE CUBE ALREADY!  NINTENDO DROPPED THE PRICE TO $100 SO THAT ANYBODY THAT HADNT BOUGHT IT ALREADY WOULD BE DECLARED BRAIN DEAD!  GET IT!

Well, no one on a GameCube site is going to advise you to avoid buying one. But what the heck, Eternal Darkness and Viewtiful Joe are worth $300! I would suggest you get these games first, as they justify buying the system.

Excellent, thanks for the feedback.    For me being able to play Ocarina and Majora's Mask again is worth the 99 bucks, but it's good to know there are some other games still in the pipeline.

I know this is a different topic, but do you think the next Nintendo console will be backward-compatible with GameCube games?

i think Sony decision to do that with the PS2 will force it to become standard however, you never know with nintendo.

if you check out the fast forward forum, there are talks that nintendo will be going back to cartridges next generation.  so really, no one knows except nintendo; and even they might not know at this point.  

honestly, i think they'll do it if (a) it is cost effective, and (b) it doesn't interfer with innovation.

There are tons of good games out.  The Gettin' Cube...finally! (Official "What game should I get?" Thread) thread has lots of good games listed in it, if you want an idea of what to get.  A few personal suggestions are Super Smash Brothers Melee, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, Kirby Air Ride (personal preference, dunno how well it goes with most people), and Super Mario Sunshine.  Among others.  Check out that thread I mentioned for more.

I would also like to encourge anyone who hasnt bought Eternal Darkness to do so.  Its the biggest sleeper on Gamecube, and you can pick it up for about $20 brand new.  Viewtiful Joe is awsome as well, definately worth a purchase.

this is THE best time to get a gamecube right now because they are gonna keep making games for i'd say at least 2 more years and tons of exclusives too much for me to type cause im lazy and you cant beat the price in my opinion

there will be a mario tennis for gamecube, but no release date has been accounced yet.  probably in spring or summer.  we'll most likely hear more about it after christmas.

Probably the best time. So many great deals you can get a complete system and all the accessories for less then $400. I paid almost that just for my launch cube and wave race!

I wouldn't worry about software.  Even if Nintendo never released another game for it, ever, we still have a huge, amazing library of games - many exclusives, I might add.  Super Smash Bros. Melee, Rogue Leader, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Viewtiful Joe, Mario Kart, and many others I have forgotten to include - many of which can be found in the $30 or so range.  Surely that's enough for you?

Just a quick metion from me the best games for the Gamecube to me is Super Smash Bros Melee and Metriod Prime. these are my favorite games for Cube and pretty high on my all time list(primes #1)

Dude, I just bought one (albeit from Wal-Mart for $79 the day after T-Day) and the reason I justified it was for its current library. When I bought it I also picked up Metroid Prime, Viewtiful Joe, Super Monkey Ball, and Animal Crossing. All those combine with the Zelda pack easily justify the purchase of the system. I want to pick up Wind Waker eventually but I figure that by the time I get through all the others I've already bought that Wind Waker will drop in price. The other thing about that (please don't start throwing the rotten tomatoes at me) is that I've never played through a Zelda game in my life. I figure I lucked out in getting the pack included with the system. I'd like to play through those so I have some background with Wind Waker ;-].

I also think that the GC has a pretty good future ahead of it. Nintendo isn't going to drop out of the console business anytime soon. Even with competition from Sony and M$ they've done really dang well. With that said the big N will want to continue supporting the GC until the end of it's lifespan so that the customers aren't left with a bad taste in their mouth when it comes time for the next round of console wars. Mario 128 anyone?

That's a really good point, Matt! What Nintendo does with the GameCube will indeed have an impact on how well their next system is received.

In the past I was a big fan of Sega consoles and I know how the eventual failure of the Saturn and Sega's lack of support for their own console ulitimately hurt Dremcast sales later on.  Sega had to work pretty hard to regain customer confidence with the Dreamcast, but there was always that "but are they going to support it?!" question.

I agree with you that Nintendo won't make the same mistake.
