GCN DBZ RPG 4Me?
« on: July 14, 2003, 09:00:39 PM »
Before you read on, understand that I am not an 11 year old American boy who caught on the Dragon Ball Z bandwagon a year ago.  I watched Dragon Ball almost ten years ago, true I was only six.  Now I have watched most of the series in the original Japanese with subtitles, where it is a show for twenty year olds full of swearing blood and gore.  Not a silly kids 'toon'.  Let us continue.

I have been a fan of DBZ for a while, and at E3 2002 when Atari (Infogrames, now called Atari) announced a fighting game for PS2 and an RPG for Gamecube under the DBZ franchise, I was excited.  There was even a minute long clip of flying through landscapes and scences from the show, supposedly a preview for a DBZ RPG.  Not since the days of the Super Nintendo has their been a decent DBZ RPG, and it was only in Japanese, getting half-translated by a computer junkie on the 'net.  Hearing about a new RPG, made by a European company (thus it being more than likely to come out in NA) made me extremely giddy.  Yes, giddy.  Now WHERES MY RPG?!  Surely someone else remembers hearing about this.  Surely I wasn't hearing and seeing things?  Sure, Budokai, a half-good fighter is coming out for GCN in August.  But ... it isn't an RPG.

I had felt this way for a while, until six months ago in some odd zine (I don't recall which) there was an article talking about the fighter for the PS2, and the RPG for Gamecube, making me realise I had not been dreaming.  But again, there has been a lack of news from any site.  I personally am peeved.  I am a fan of many different animes, some series, some not, but this is my favourite.  I want my half decent game.  Theyve been working on it for a year and a half.  Surely they've gotten somewhere.  Right?

A DBZ RPG would be hard to make since there are many abilities the chars use and it would end up probably a game mostly with flying chars or land combat kind of thing. The only DBZ game confimed for GCN right now is Budokai (sp?). But if you want some DBZ action then I guess try DBZ: Legacy of Goku 2 for GBA

Infrogames' R&D department has probably assumed that GCN is too "Kiddie" to develop for.

Responding to Lord die Seis, a DBZ RPG would NOT be impossible.  The one for SNES was actually really well done.

Anyway, it's good to see that I'm not the only one who saw it.  I sent a letter to IGNCube, but it's like my tenth one (different subjects) and they've all been intelligent, but none have been posted, so I'm not all too hopefull.

Good look getting printed at IGN- they only show letters that make fun of Fran. Anyway, I;m sure one of the admins, like Rick or Bloodworth, could tell you if it's still slated for a Gamecube release or not.

Poor old Fran.  I hope she - erm, I mean he - doesn't take it all seriously.
Anyway, I sent it like a week ago, and they still haven't even updated mail bag, so methinks mail is comming in slowly.  I still am hoping get posted.  Even if they say 'We were wondering that too, but we haven't heard from them' would be good.  People from developement companies look at IGN every day, so if they realise some people are still interested, they may choose to release some screens or somesuch.
Or maybe they quit the project quietly, which would incurr my wrath.

There were numerous DBZ RPG's back in the day in Japan. I dont know if they were any good, but I guess a DBZ RPG would work

(Hey, they're making an X Men RPG, whuddia think?

Well, the ERSB seems to appreciate that use of the word.  Games like Eternal Darkness and Conkers Bad Fur Day are rated 'Mature' for violence and (CBFD) sexual references.

In the SNES RPG, you had methinks 5 random options, from kicks, to punches, to 'special attack'.  If you chose the special attack option, then you would have a choice of all the KI attacks you presently knew.  It worked fairly well, and there was strategy involved, since each random option and a random (but shown) strength, both offensively and devesively.  Every time you used one of the options, the next turn another would take it's place.  Some items re-randomized the different options, some changed their strength, etc.  It worked well.

And I would want it to be turn-based.
