Best way to clean NES/SNES cartridges?

What is the best way to keep NES/SNES cartridges clean or to clean them after an extended period of non-use?

Rubbing alcohol, although Nintendo states not to do this.  It has always worked for me.  One bit of warning-once you use the alcohol, you'll probably have to use it every time.  But the games will work everytime, so its a fair trade.
