Metroid: Prime lock up problem
« on: May 25, 2003, 08:12:05 PM »
I remember reading about this back when the game was released, but don't remember the specifics.  I just defeated the rock creature and got the spider ball.  I've headed back to the ruins to explore the tempreture anomaly.  Now everytime I play the game locks up on me after playing for a while.  It just totally freezes and the musics gets weird.  I can't reset the GC and have to shut it down.  It restarts fine.  I've had the game since release and never had a problem, and all my other games work great.  I've had the GC since release also.  Is it a game glitch or the machine.  I'm starting to worry.

Import the PAL version (needs freeloader), it DOES NOT lock up like the NTSC version. Plus it's harder too....oops sorry you are Yanke so it may be too hard for you....LOL

i have the 'yank' version, and it doesn't lock uip...ever.  As far as the PAL version being harder, i believe Nintendo just stated that so you would feel better waiting 6 months longer....heee  heeee

It's harder in the sense that enemies drop items less frequently. We also got some extra features like voiceovers in the intro and outro, and bug fixes (I had a list somewhere, oh well)

Anyway...I can't really help you, Army, I haven't experienced any lock-ups in Metroid Prime before. (I had a lockup in WW a couple of weeks ago though. That sucked.) I heard it was to do with IBM manufacturing slightly faulty CPU's in the early batches. That's probably completely wrong though.

In some areas of MP, almost every enemy drops a item, but in others I have almost died because of lack of missiles and health... Oh, I own the "yank" version.

There was a point made by IBM that 1 in every 10,000 GameCubes that were shipped prior to Metroid Prime have a processor bug that cause the game to fail. This is due to the fact that Metroid Prime fills the GCN's data queue (Metroid Prime is supposedly the only game thus far to do that).  I guess you just have bad luck(.1%).

.01% Actually . I have yet to have a game lock up on me yet, althought Turok looked like it did. I found out that I was taking it's sweet time loading.

LOL,

Recalled reading that in forums but no where else :0.

The game has a crash bug (actually a few of them) and it's in the ruins.  Simple as that.   You usually run into it if you are "forcing" your way though (meaning your rushing though).  It has something to do with loading (since the GC loads while you play).

This isn't the first game to recieve a crash bug though, Rogue Squadron had one as well.

my games frozen ONCE in the ruins.

though ive gone through the game 5 times.

Kinda weird.   But that was after my cube was on for a *long* time, and was probably overheating.

I had a huge problem with the game freezing in the elevator between the ruins and Tallon Overworld.  It happened the a lot for two or three days, but it stopped the day I said "If it freezes again, I'm calling Nintendo."  Apparently threatening the Gamecube works.

Oh, just a small shout-out to N's customer service.  Whe Rogue Leader froze on me (every time), I called the Nintendo hotline to find out what the problem is.  They said for me to ship them my games, system, controllers, and memory cards to see if it happened to anything else.  I was really pissed off when they said it would take a month for it all to work.  So I packed it up, sent it, and waited.  Five days later, I got a package with brand new copies of games, new controllers, and a brand spankin' new Gamecube.  The letter with it said that the problem was with the Gamecube and some discs were scratched during the experimental process, so they sent me brand new stuff to compensate.  My memory cards came back a week later.  So, go N.  This is much better than Sony's "customer service".

Yup, I was hauling butt to the anomalous region in the ruins, and it has only happend in the ruins.  I must have been exploring the Magmoor region last night for about two hours with no problems.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

Nope, never had a problem with lock-ups, especially not Metroid Prime.  Hope it keeps working, though.

concerning the original post, i had never had a problem until after i got the spider ball and was returning to the ruins.  the only thing is, i hadn't been rushing through the game, i had done the opposite, iwas going thru all the rooms thouroughly to find missile expansions.  i spent a long time in one room, and in the corridor after that it froze.  it's funny, i knew a chozo ghost was gonna come somwhere, and i remember "be ready for anything when it comes"  i wasn't ready for this.  is there anything i can do, or do i have to leave it?

If you run through parts of a level tooo fast the game can lock up since it did not load the data for the new area. This is why some times when you go to open a door, you have to wait a few seconds. The area is still loading. It locked up a few times on me when I ran to an elevator, so I always stop at the elevators and wait 5-10 seconds before getting on. Hasnt locked up on me again. Not really a problem, but I guess they forgot to put some code in that would make the elevator wait until an area was loaded before moving.

If you change weapons while moving from tunnel to tunnel the game might freeze. I guess the game has to load the gun effects as well?

Man, I hope they dont do this stuff in Metroid GC 2.
