Why can't I get into Pokemon?
« on: July 22, 2013, 11:58:05 PM »
Vague question I know but bare with me. I loved Pokemon Red and have REPETITIVELY tried to go back to the newer games but I always feel overwhelmed with the stuff that they have thrown in over the years (breeding, talent shows, etc) Am I alone on this one?

Well, you're certainly not alone. I'm right there with you. I have played Blue, Yellow and a little bit of Gold, but haven't really cared about the series in many years. I am, however, open to the possibility that the series could still surprise me. Hopefully this upcoming duo of games can win me over with some fresh and interesting ideas.

As to why you can't get into the series? I honestly couldn't say. For me the problem has always been that the series evolved at a glacial pace, with each new instalment providing only minute changes to the formulae. In other words, I became bored by the series.

You might be trying too much of the new things. There's a lot of optional stuff, but you gotta remember you can just play through the story, get the badges, become the champion, and worry about all that other stuff later.

I was going to suggest the same thing. It's a simple JRPG where you can use the complicated things if you want - but you can also just go through, catch what looks cool and have fun with the single player.

If you're new to the series, the only EVs you should be worried about are the ones you make Vaporeons out of.

I ignore every contest, talent show, musical, beauty pageant, etc and I am a huge Pokemon fan. That stuff just does not appeal to me.

Just go through the game, catch some Pokemon, get your badges and be the champion. Then if you want to dive deeper just go for it. All the IV's, EV's and real strategies are for real life battles anyway or for any form of the optional battle subway/tower/what ever.

Playing the story first and then worrying about the in depth stuff later is definitely the way to go.

So if you or anyone else needs clear and easy direction breeding good pokemon please just ask me. If someone on this board complains about the overwhelming state of Pokemon WITHOUT accepting my help just one more time... I'll continue to offer my help as politely as ever.

There are lots of guides to help but it took me a long time to truly understand what it all meant.

What you could also do is start from the beginning: play a game from the first generation. Then the next gen. And so on and so forth. I'm sure if you went that way the new additions won't be so overwhelming.

I've thought about it doing that and it was my plan but I stalled in LeafGreen and now I don't remember much of anything anymore of what I was doing in that game and the prospect of playing one long RPG game after another to catch up in the series seems like too much of an investment when there are so many other games I could play or keep up with.

Still my plan was to just keep moving my collected Pokemon on from one game to the next in the hopes I could just start blasting through the latter games but I don't know if that is actually possible or not since I've never delved that far into the series.

That said, the preview shown today of Pokemon X and Y makes me very tempted to just forget all the past games and dive right in with these ones. It looks very, very impressive.

try booting it up again, leaf green (and fire red) have a sort of 'previously on' type thing that helps you out

although if you beat red I don't think you would miss much from skipping it.

and I believe you have to beat the elite four before you can begin importing, although you can import into one game and trade them to another if you don't mind a few disobedient Pokemon

I say go right to heart gold/soul silver, then take that strategy to platinum if you so choose or skip right to b/w2,

playing them all is a trivial thing, the best thing to do is establish a link from fr/lg to x/y

also as much as I love the twist they pulled in the contests with the characters mother entering at the hardest difficulty the whole contest/pokethelon thing ranges from pretty much broken(I beat all 5 catagorys in r/s,  they are pm broken) to mildly entertaining

After spend soooo much time with Blue - Crystal each version yeah... Their have to be a pretty big change for me not to have the been their, done that vibe through the whole thing.  Right now the only thing that would definitely get me to buy a new Pokemon would be being able to play it with my son and until I can put it on my TV that ain't happen'n.

Part of the reason I stopped playing LeafGreen was so that I could get the FireRed version and swap over Pokemon to complete the the Pokedex and catch 'em all and all that jazz. Sadly, it's become the one Pokemon game I've never bought (except for the Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald games) and I have a copy of everything since.

Now that I think about it, I have no idea how to work the Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald games into my order. The plan was to beat Green and Red, then go to Silver/Gold, then Diamond/Pearl/ Platinum and then Black and White. I completely forgot about those 3. I have no idea if importing DS pokemon would be possible for GBA games (I'm talking 1st and 2nd generation Pokemon types).

However, if I can't import until getting to the final four then the plan is screwy in the first place as I had hoped to just keep bringing my super leveled Pokemon from one game to the next and start sweeping through them.

This is why I can't get into Pokemon. Too far behind.

I am one of the few who just doesn't get it at all. I have played through the first one, blue i think, a few times but I always get stuck at the same part and even by then I am forcing myself to keep playing until I finally give up and move on. I want to like the game because it looks cool but I don't know I just can't get into it no matter how hard I try, same thing happened with Pikmin I really wanted to like that game it looked fun but it got overwhelming and boring right away. I would like to go back and try again someday but I think my tastes are geared towards simpler games anyways. I never considered Pokemon an RPG though I find it strange others do.

Pokémon is certainly an RPG, on a technical level. It is essentially Nintendo's take on Dragon Quest, which could be taken to explain why the series hasn't changed that much over the years

I'd say to try B2/W2. The story in those games is fun and pulls you along for much of it. Fighting Team Plasma is the main part of the story and getting the badges actually feels kinda secondary. I would argue that the game kinda guides you a bit too much, especially when it comes to you team, but with so many Pokemon, that could be a good thing for someone trying to get in to it.

I think they should remove the barrier of beating the Elite 4 to transfer your pokemon from a previous game. So what if I want to keep my tired and true team in each game and be OP'd.

Though, you can TRADE the pokemon, right? Could always trade and breed your favorite ones and then progress through your journey with the children of your team. That would keep me engaged longer.

I have a few gen 1 & 2 faves that really do make or break my enjoyment of newer games if I can or cannot have them with me.

Just a follow up on my last post, which concerned me being a long since lapsed Pokémon fan.

I did have X on pre-order through Amazon but which I have now cancelled. The more I saw of those games the less convinced I became that they were going to offer what I wanted from a modern Pokémon game. Those changes which are considered major by dyed-in-the-wool Pokémon fans, Mega evolutions and the introduction of Fairy types for example, provide another layer of complexity, but one which is still inextricably tied to the previous games. In order words, I came to the realisation that X/Y, despite the new engine, are games which aren't seeking to establish their own, brand new, foundation.

I might still pick up X or Y at a later date, but my initial jolt of enthusiasm at the prospect that these games might offer something genuinely new has dissipated. I'm much less certain now that I would be satisfied playing them than I was when the games were announced.

I actually didn't pick up black and white or b/w2 so...
