The black Wii U may be available at launch.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31281

Nintendo will share details about Wii U color variations when they finally announce the launch date for the console.

Rich George of IGN tweeted a response given by Nintendo when asked about the availability of a black Wii U at launch. The company commented: "When we announce the launch date, price and specific components to be included in the package, we will also discuss the color variations."

Nintendo has featured the black Wii U console and GamePad alongside the more traditional white in its E3 and Nintendo Direct presentations and the black color variant has also shown up in some early marketing materials for the console. Both would seem to suggest the intention to release the console in both flavors. However, when announcing the Wii (then known as "Revolution") at E3 2005, the console was shown in black before being released exclusively in white in 2006.

Given that NeoGAF has pictures of marketing displays featuring both white and black Wii U systems, I think it's pretty safe to assume that both colors will be available at launch.

Given the confusion about what the Wii U is and how many people think it's some add-on to the Wii, I think they'd be best off not offering in white.  People associate white with the Wii, so switching to a new default color scheme would be good to help differentiate it at launch.

I agree. At the minimum I think the default color should be ANYTHING other than white. If they want to have white as an optional color, I guess that's fine, but it should not be the default color of the system.

That said, the sky blue color featured on the game packaging seems interesting. It might not be everyone's favorite color, but I don't think there would be as much hate for it as there was for the purple color of the Gamecube. Could sky blue work as the Wii U's default color? The fact that we see it on the game cases may be an indicator it will be the color of the system as well.

I think Nintendo heard the crys of fanboys who said they loved the black color. I will totally buy a black one, that finish looks nice

"price and specific components to be included in the package"  a bit vague but I assume they are indeed adding software to the standard console set otherwise they wouldn't have mentioned anything at all :0.

I'll stick with white.

People don't need to see the dust gather on my Nintendo console. That's only possible with white  ;)

I really hope it comes in black. This is going to be my first Nintendo console system that I'm going to buy at launch. So please have different colors Nintendo.

It seemed like about half the units at E3 were black, so I'd be absolutely shocked if black weren't available at launch.

That, or it refers to hardware in the box, such as the Pro Controller, as well as cables (HDMI?).

I would want black since the system itself doesnt look any different from the original for the most part. If they made a blue one, I would hope for a cobalt blue, and not the pale blue.  A pimp hat purple wii u like the 3ds would be awesome.

Why must each console be just one color? I would like to see a tie-dyed multi-colored Wii U.

It's really easy to pop the side panels off of the Wii.  Why not just make the whole shell customizable and then people can not only pick whatever colour they want but Nintendo can sell custom shells?  Then you can have your tie-dyed or black console or whatever.  They could market this and then really no colour is associated as the "main" one.

Microsoft did that with the 360. It never really amounted to much, and I'm pretty sure they dropped it for the Slim model.

Yeah, but Microsoft doesn't know how to be cool or to do things with style. Nintendo could make it work, though.

Nintendo most certainly does not know how to be cool. I love them, they're an amazing developer, but they are in no way a company you'd accuse of being cool.

As far as having things in different colors go, they are. They were the ones who first invented the practice. I remember years ago when they came out with the old original Gameboys in different colors and I remember that was a big deal at the time because it was unprecedented. You didn't see other systems before that offer multiple color options, so Nintendo invented the concept.

Now as far as what I said about Microsoft being uncool, I would refer you to the Zune. That was MS's attempt to counter the popularity of the iPod and it was a total failure. I don't think anyone thinks Microsoft is a cool company. They've found success with the Xbox, and it is a very popular console, but that's not so much because of it being "cool", but rather because Microsoft used its wealth to force people to like it. Microsoft is like some spoiled rich kid with no friends, so they have to pay people to pretend to like them. That's why you see all these money hats from Microsoft for exclusives and timed exclusives and all that. That's the only reason anyone likes them. Its not becasue they are "cool". Without that money propping it up the Xbox brand would quickly collapse.

Maybe not everyone likes Nintendo, but those who do like Nintendo do so because of what they are and not because of money hats. Nintendo doesn't pay for its love like Microsoft does.

Wii U looks really cool in black, so I think that'll be its "default" color.
I love the Power Glove! It's so bad!
