Holy Crap! Mad Science Thread! (or disastrous events)

You know how we have a thread for good technological advances, this is one for bad ones.

http://www.doctortipster.com/6952-dutch-researcher-created-a-super-influenza-virus-with-the-potential-to-kill-millions.html

I'm sure they were researching this stuff to cure the flu, but you know at any time some crazy PETA people can break in and release the ferrets.

Any number of doomsday movie mishaps can be used to release that kinda ****. It needs to destroyed. Why is it even a question of whether or not to publish that ****? Should be an obvious no.

That's extremely naive. The first thing that'll happen when this is released and replicated is a cure will be found; better now then when it actually mutates into a dangerous pathogen.

Furthermore, there is no telling what we can find out as we cure it.

Better to just test on humans anyway. They're obviously a closer genetic match, and there are plenty of them to go around. Between death row inmates impoverished citizens willing to make a quick buck, you'd never run out. Then you don't have to worry about the ethical issues of subjecting unwilling and non-consenting creatures to often deadly procedures. Besides, what's a handful of human lives really worth when resources are being depleted at a record rate? ;)

...like ices. Is that proper?

I know Fish and Fishes actually have use. Whereas if you are talking about the plural of one type of fish its just fish, but if your talking about multiple types of fish then its fishes.

yeah, i still don't like that... People.

One time I had a conversation about the use of third person possessive adjective. They were telling me "Their" was wrong, and they said use "his or hers", and I was like "no"

edit: wait nevermind

it was using the word "they" to refer to a singular with an undetermined gender, for which he said "use he or she", and I said no. I have a good argument for using "They", what if the singular person was intersex, a transsexual, or just androgynous?

any situation where I can use one word to express an idea... I use that. Thats the English way. I don't call a Tanuki a racoon dog, i don't call a Panda a mottled bear.

I use "they" (and its forms) to refer to people when I don't know their gender. I think that should be ok because saying "she or he" or "his or hers" is awkward in conversation. Also, using they establishes that I don't know the person's gender just fine and enables the person to let me know in their next sentence.
