Mega Man Still an Important Franchise for Capcom

Even with the cancellation of several Mega Man projects, the Blue Bomber is still relevant for Capcom.

Mega Man isn't dead, said Christian Svensson, Senior Vice President of strategic planning and business development at Capcom, in a recent video Q&A.

This has come in light of several cancellations of Mega Man themed projects, such as Mega Man Legends 3, which would have been a 3DS exclusive. To this he stated that ā€œOh, absolutely not. The frustrating thing for me is I have nothing I can hold up and say, ā€˜Oh, here’s this other Mega Man thing’. Absolutely, we have other things… Mega Man is a very important brand to Capcom. We get questions [like] ā€˜Are you guys trying to kill the brand?’

ā€œNo, absolutely not. It will continue to be a very important brand for us. I wish I had something I could hold and display for you that that’s the case, but I don’t right now. But super, super important to us; I do want to express that.ā€

Regarding the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 and other titles under the Mega Man name, Svensson explained that ā€œThe decision was not made lightly. Certainly, we knew there would be a lot of upset people and in spite of that, we still had to make that decision. That doesn’t mean we don’t care about you at all. I unfortunately can’t get into the details of it, but it was not a decision that was made lightly and I can tell you that no one is happy about that decision, but it was a decision that had to be made.ā€

The funny thing about it is that Mega Man Universe and Legends 3 both looked far better than almost every Mega Man game released in the past decade. I guess they cancelled them because they were actually good games and couldn't be used as quick cash-ins.

Oh well, just bring on Mega Man 11 already.
