The Witcher
« on: October 18, 2008, 04:00:30 AM »
Played this game tonight, still don't know why the character is called a "Witcher" The story is decent so far, the RPG elements are decent and not too complicated for giving so many options. I don't fully understand how combat works yet.

Anyone else try this game?

Yeah, there was sex with a scantily clad woman in the first couple hours. I think I got a collectible card from it.

Yeah, you collect cards for all the girls you knock up. Gotta catch 'em all!

The character is a "witcher" because he's mutated in some way, think Claymore.

The combat system confused me until I realized that rapid clicking doesn't do anything at all, quite the departure from Diablo :P

Oh and I think you get scantily clad women in the US version, nude women in the european version.

The combat system in the game definitely sucked. It was a little too akin to KotOR for my tastes, which is to say it involved little skill and even less interaction. The story was quite alright however. I'd say that the game is definitely worth a try... I'm sure plenty of people dig the combat system.

I just played this game since I picked it up on a Steam sale a few weeks back for pennies on the dollar (Enhanced Edition).

The beginning combat is HORRIBLE. I didn't even understand what I was doing until I went up against that wizard in the circle. Once I figured it out it wasn't too bad, but it's still far from good.

I quit right after the green dogs.... but I'm sure I'll pick it up again later.

There are so many graphical & audio glitches in this game it's not even funny.
There were people cutting each other off (maybe that was intentional)
a song loading for a split second then being replaced by a different song
during a conversation with one person, another person walks through us as if we weren't there. I mean actually clipping right through one of the other characters.
Scenes loading and playing out and then 3-5 seconds later the grass will show up.

Nothing game breaking, but alot of it is certainly distracting.

They are very brief and only momentarily distracting.

Did you beat this game? How useful is the alchemy? and does the combat get better(to watch atleast) as you upgrade your combo skills?

I never beat it, I need to go back some day. I didn't mind the combat really, I played more weapon oriented than magic.

I've played and beaten the Witcher: Enhanced Edition on Steam last year so here are my impressions.

Graphics: I really dug the game's gritty, dark fantasy art style.  The character models and such are good and Geralt moves very smoothly during combat.  The game came out 4 years ago, so there aren't a lot of modern technical affects, but if you have at least an Nvidia 8800/240 and above or an AMD 4000 series card, you should be able to achieve an almost constant 60 fps with everything at max settings.

Combat: The combat was a lot of fun and there is an indicator that tells you when to click the mouse button so that you can smoothly transition into the next part of your combo.  If you just clicked at random while he fought, all he did was do the same thing over again.  I didn't use magic much (although online faqs have some cool all magic builds that proved to be both fun and powerful) but it certainly helped augment my combat skills.  Some fights were very challenging, but in the end as long as you chose the correct stance for that particular foe, you were all set.  The opening prologue goes over all this for combat. Very engaging and never a chore which is what all rpg combat should be.

Story and Pacing: I really enjoyed the story and Geralt's role in it all.  Your decisions were rarely easy to make and the choices you made had both immediate and far flung consequences on how things progressed in the world.  In this aspect, I really felt that CD Project did a better job at creating a more compelling conversation system than say, in a game like Mass Effect 1+2. My only complaint is that the first chapter (not the prologue) starts off pretty slow, but after that, the story picks up and keeps you involved until the very end.  I think I finished the game in 42 hours, and that's with doing almost all of the side quests.

Side Notes:  The game originally shipped in a glitchy mess.  Since the enhanced edition came out for steam, most of the game is bug free.  Outside a couple clipping issues, I didn't experience any annoying graphical glitches or bad texture pop in. To put it in perspective, my computer is about 4 years old rocking a core2duo oc'ed to 3ghz , 4gig of ram, and a geforce 250...not cutting edge in the least. I rather enjoyed the love card collecting game, the art work was nice (the women were naked in my version, but tastefully so, more burlesque vs. bang bros.) Alchemy was certainly helpful and made the game easier for me, but it was not necessary on normal.  If you play the game on hard difficulty though, alchemy is essential for survival.

For those trying to figure out what to put their skill points to, I recommend gamefaqs to at least get you started on making a solid build for your character.  Depending on your playstyle, you'll want to focus your points on a few skills first before branching out.  The game does a terrible job telling how each stat affects you outside the combat and magic skill set and you can't respec your character once you lock in skill points.

Overall, I enjoyed the game greatly and am looking forward to the sequel (the end of the Witcher is awesome!) and recommend anybody who owns it to give it time because you will certainly enjoy yourself.
