At some point (not in the immediate future) Nintendo probably will combine their handheld and console lines into one single product. Consoles keep getting smaller, and at the same time handhelds keep getting more powerful. Eventually the two will intersect and at that point it would make absolutely no sense to maintain two separate products.

Why? Its like an excuse to release twice as many entries into an IP and thus sell more. I don't think they will do that.

Consoles keep getting smaller, and at the same time handhelds keep getting more powerful. Eventually the two will intersect and at that point it would make absolutely no sense to maintain two separate products. The merged system would be portable like a DS, but it would also be capable of hooking up to a TV and would be able to accept controllers via bluetooth so it would also be just like a console. So then you have both products in one and video gaming would be so much simpler from that point on.

This what I meant, Caterkiller, because the 3DS is the initial step in what Chozo Ghost os getting at and the wii 2 and other home console will eventually merge into the handhelds and become one giant entity. This might take another decade, but it will happen eventually. Also, it seems to me that Nintendo has always been a handheld gaming company, and before you chew me up and say, "What about their home consoles?" Remember that Nintendo has slipped from the console market before but they have held onto the handheld market since the 1980s with no sign of ever letting go.

More importantly, it's an excuse to sell me twice as much hardware.  Nintendo makes money on hardware sales.  They want you to buy both a handheld system and a console from them.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

As technology grows, consoles will always be more powerful than handhelds. So I don't see Nintendo wanting to make a console so weak that it could double as a handheld.

Didn't they make the Wii?

Just kidding, of course!

Chozo-Ghost and Kytim I just can't accept that. I believe it was Miyamoto who said something along the lines that he wishes that people didn't have to sit in front of their TVs to play games, but to completely combine the handheld and home console devices into one just seems like such a bad move. I would think Nintendo would want both to feel very differently, and unless that's one big honkin piece of hardware to carry around the control input will almost always be different from a handheld to a home console, at least judging by how Nintendo is doing things lately.

Motion is here to stay for Nintendo wether you like it or not, and unless we can have our tiny little screens propped up several feet away from us as we swing our arms to Wii Sports 2020 while waiting at the bus stop, it just ain't gonna happen. There will be different experiences from playing games on your TV than on your hand held on go. It used to be they were exactly the same except for raw power, but those days are over, well unless you only play PSP of course.

I am basically saying, developers have not and will not, for a super duper long time be able to recreate the experiences we have on the TV into our handhelds and vice versa control wise. Natal, and Move will not work on our typical sized handhelds of today, unless we start carrying Ipad sized devices everywhere with reasonable amount of room in front of the player. And even when we will be able to start touching our TVs with touch sensitive screens you can bet very few games will be made with the feature before they are all just canceled all together.

Nintendo players and One Piece readers, just better people.

Nintendo has a habit of imitating Apple, so I do see them releasing a Nintendo rip off of the mac mini eventually.

Nintendo is like Apple in a lot of ways, but the only way that's the result of imitation is in the overall look of their recent products, not anything specific.
