So what happens to 'taboo' topics if laws change?
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:03:50 AM »
A conversation and a locked thread in the funhouse got me wondering. If an illegal substance like marijuana is nationally legalized in the USA will it not be a forbidden topic anymore? I'm assuming yes.

But then I started thinking about some other matters like homosexuality. Is that going to remain banned until an actual amendment is made to the constitution or is that one going to remain banned no matter what?

Was just wondering. Not necessarily just for those two matters but in general I was wondering what would and could happen.

Both will be banned on NWR until made legal in the USA.

Same goes for religion--off-limits until you're free to practice whichever religion you see fit.  Oh wait ....
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Taboo is not the same as illegal. For example, it's legal for a woman to have sex with her step-son, but it's still considered taboo.

Stuff like religion and politics are banned because they are controversial, same with drugs. Even if marijuana somehow got legalized nationally (which I doubt will ever happen), it would still be a little controversial to talk about.

Homosexuality isn't off limits because of legality reasons, it is because, like the other topics, it is simply inappropriate for a gaming forum. There are plenty of other places out there to have those kinds of discussions, and if someone really wants to have that kind of conversation with one or more members here, they can do so in PMs.

I was just wondering if there was a 'threshold' of sorts where we would collectively decide if a banned subject would become OK to speak of in the future.

Of all the topics drugs seem to be the most clear cut as once something is legalized I don't see resistance to it putting up much of a fight.

If I ever see the following threads I will drop the Hammer of Thor:

It's Toke o'clock
Blazeo Kazooie: Getting Jiggy with Jiggies
Smoke Trees Every Day
Jon Lindemann is a good guy

The first three are obvious, but you'd have to be tripping pretty hard to believe the fourth one.
