DS price drop
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:19:37 AM »
Sites are already speculating that this is a hint at the 3DS price, but Nintendo just issued a press release stating that they are dropping the price of the DS. Effective September 12, Nintendo is dropping the price of the DSi to $149.99 and the DSi XL to $169.99. The DS Lite will remain at $129.99.

They also say that the DS has sold 42.3 million systems in the United States.

And this comes less than twenty-four hours after I bought a DS Lite. What are the odds of that?

(Even then, I'm in the boat of "wanting to play DSi stuff without having to buy a DSi".  :P: )
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

I suppose the DSi XL price drop would irk me if I hadn't already gotten so much use out of the system.

I think at this point everyone that has held out wouldn't be swayed by a price drop anyways. Of course, there is always the random customer that isn't "in the know" about the 3ds.

Where'd you buy it? Many large department stores will give you any major sales in the last 30 days.

I wonder if this is an indication that the upcoming September announcement for the 3DS release date (and perhaps price) is going to be favorable for those that are hoping for it to be by the end of this year.

@DAaaMan
That wouldn't help him though, he bought the DS Lite and Nintendo is not dropping the price of the DS Lite.

I was just on vacation for a week and in my spare time I played so much Pokemon on my friends Dsi XL! It is soo easy on my eyes! I almost went out and bought one this weekend. I know I should wait for the 3DS but I really want the XL! I am torn between waiting or not. I just want a bigger screen!

If you want the big screen, get the DSi XL. It's not like you have to get rid of it when you get a 3DS.

I got it from Walmart, mainly due to the assistance I had from an unused gift card. I will admit, I thought of an XL for a few moments, but passed on it. I couldn't help but wonder if the 3DS will continue the DSi things...

I'm getting excited for 3DS now, I think its more and more likely it will release this holiday season. Previous DS version price drops is the first indicator that 3DS is coming.

Or they are gearing it up for it's final holiday in the limelight and hope that they clear out most of their DS stock so early next year they can fill warehouses with 3DS stock. I still say 3DS is next year. One last holiday is in store for the regular DS family.

The XL has the advantage of both screens scaling properly without the need for black bars, while the 3ds will have a bit of awkward business on the top screen when scaling. Personally, I like how the XL fit in my hands better than the 3ds.  I have only held a 3ds for 20 minutes or so and it was either wired to a lady/table, but for me the comfort was immediately apparent with the XL. Purely a matter of how large the system was.

If I were you I would consider:
  • what I was upgrading from (DSi, Lite, or OG)
  • which DS games you own and have yet to play or have a desire to replay
  • which DS games you plan on buying this year
  • your income, will buying the 3ds and XL break the bank?
  • are you a crazy person.
If you answered : Lite, about 10, too many, almost, and yes, then you are in the same boat I was. In that situation, I went for it. Then again, that was a bit earlier this year.

Just don't get an XL, it'll make the 3DS lame.

Or it won't and the XL will look great next to your 3DS.

It is amazing that after all these years the DS (any model) hasn't dropped down to $99 yet. In November the DS will be 6 years old.

Perhaps because it's still selling quite well. If you'll recall, the GameCube sagged pretty well behind its competitors and within two years or so, it was down to 100. The Wii did sell quite well and it took three years for a price drop. Maybe the DS price drop doesn't come along often due to sales or because Nintendo introduces new models/colors every few months.

Didn't the original style DS have a price drop to $99 when the DSlite dropped to $129? I mean, it was pretty much sold out in every single store... but I was thinking it dropped.

If there was, I missed it. I just recall that the original DS model stopped appearing on store shelves within a couple of months after the Lite was introduced.

Maybe some stores did that, but I think (I may be wrong, but I couldn't find anything online about the final DS phat price) that when Nintendo dropped the DS Lite to $129 they kept the original at the same price and just slowly phased it out.
