Hardware Sales Up in June NPD Report

Red Dead still rules the software chart, but Super Mario Galaxy 2 makes its mark as well.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/23703

The NPD Group has released its U.S. hardware and software sales numbers for the month of May (5/30/10 - 7/3/10), and each chart bears many similarities to last month.

The industry on the whole was down when compared to the same period last year (dropping to $1.10B from $1.17B), but sales of console hardware were up 6 percent year-on-year.  The Nintendo DS once again led the way with torrid sales of 510.7K, up sharply from last month's 383.7K.  The Xbox 360 was close behind in second place with sales of 451.7K, pulling ahead of the Wii's 422.5K units sold with its second-largest non-holiday sales month since the launch of Halo 3 in September 2007. Despite a fourth-place finish, the PlayStation 3 pushed its streak of month-on-month sales increases to 11 months running.

NPD US Video Game Hardware Sales - June 2010

1. Nintendo DS - 510.7k
2. Xbox 360 - 451.7K
3. Wii - 422.5K
4. PlayStation 3 - 304.8K
5. PSP - 121.0K

The top of the software chart is once again dominated by a single title, Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption. Its combined sales of 963.2K were enough to land it the first and third spots on the chart for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, respectively. Its strong sales also make it the highest-selling game of 2010 so far.

Nintendo effectively owns the rest of the chart, however. Super Mario Galaxy 2 raked in 548.4K worth of sales in its first full sales month to land the number two spot. New Super Mario Bros. Wii keeps on selling and appears at number four, with Just Dance and Wii Fit Plus taking the fifth and sixth spots. Toy Story 3 for Nintendo DS capitalized on the movie's recent release to grab the seventh spot, and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 for Wii appears at number nine. UFC 10: Undisputed for Xbox 360 and PS3 rounds out the bottom of the list.

One notable omission from the June software top 10 is EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11. NPD's Anita Frazier noted that, "The new Tiger Woods release sold only 32 percent of what last year's release sold in its introductory month at retail. That said, last year's game saw a huge sales increase over previous versions".

Mario galaxy 2 will have the most sales in the long run. I hope the great sales of both games encourages more summer releases.

I'm a bit surprised to the 360 console numbers.  Is this a reaction to the new "slim" model, or did something else cause the nice jump in sales this month?  Were there some major games attracting new customers that I'm not aware of?

Seems like a strong month for hardware across the board though.

Yeah, it's definitely a combination of massive price cuts on the old Xbox 360 models to clear out old stock, along with the novelty of the new 360 Slim. I'm sure the buzz around Red Dead Redemption is leading to some people caving on buying a 360 as well.

I'm still amazed at those DS numbers.  I mean, 500K+ in a random month in the middle of the summer?  WTF

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if NOA delays the 3DS launch in North America even further just to keep milking the DS numbers.  Hell, if the system keeps doing 500K every month, I wouldn't be surprised if Japan and Europe have the 3DS for at least 6 months if not more before it finally reaches North America.

I don't think it will have and effect on the release date. The GBA was still selling over 100K systems for over a year after the DS came out.

Yeah, I don't think the sales of the current DS will have influence over when to launch the 3DS. I could see the DS continuing to sell if the 3DS is $200 or higher, and the current DS models get price cuts. People like parents who buy it for their kids would likely get the cheaper ones, figuring they're just going to lose/destroy them.

This is kind of a fact. The least expensive models (the DS Lite, or a used DS Fat) are good for these kind of situations.

And since the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games, DS games sales won't suffer... hopefully.

Even though the DS hardware is selling the software has gone down so I'm pretty sure nintendo's going launch the 3DS on time.

The DS is selling quite well based on third party titles and "evergreen" games like Mario Kart and NSMB; it doesn't need active support from Nintendo to sell. Even so, I expect Nintendo to release it within the window they originally set.
