Nintendo Names Zelda for Wii, Discusses Release Date

The new game is heralded as "a turning point" in the series' history.

Nintendo has revealed the name of the next console Zelda game at their E3 2010 presentation.  The name of the new game is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and it will be released "next year".

The control scheme of the new game was the subject of much speculation.  The Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus is used as your sword, and the Nunchuk is used as your shield.  Your sword movements are matched 1:1 with Wii MotionPlus, and certain enemies must be killed by striking them with the sword in a certain direction or hitting them in a way that avoids their guarding. Enemies can also be "confused" by moving your sword in a certain way, and using the Nunchuk to bash with your shield can be used to redirect shots back at enemies.

To grab items, you hold down B to open up your "pocket" and then select an item; the item is then mapped to your item slot automatically. Shigeru Miyamoto demonstrated the slingshot, which used Wii MotionPlus for aiming. He also demonstrated how bombs can now be rolled along the ground like a bowling ball. To aim arrows, you hold down the C button, aim, and then release C to fire your arrow.

One new item that was shown is the Beetle.  A beetle is a sort of "guided missle" that can be used to pick up remote objects in the environment.

A whip was also shown, using Wii MotionPlus to allow users to grab items and attack monsters.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be on the show floor at E3, so look for our impressions!

It always seemed obvious the game would be not be released in 2010 (considering that the ONLY info we had was a single piece of artwork and the fact that it would use Wii MotionPlus).

I can't wait for it.
