Chance for punchout GC
« on: April 30, 2003, 05:09:20 PM »
At quite a young age i was introduced to atari then the nes.  One of my favorite games was punchout.  I was excited when i got to play punchout for the snes.  But i forgot about this good series until recently.  In animal crossing i unlocked the original punchout, and i wondered why cant nintendo make a punchout for the gamecube, old school fans such as myself would be quite excited.  And ive been waiting to square off against super macho man just one last time?  What do you guys think?

Punchout was great. The chances of Punchout GC is pretty slim. Nintendo IRD makes the Punchout series, but hasn't made a game since 96. They mostly focus on hardware stuff. Nintendo could do what they did with another IRD game, Pilotwings, and give it to a 3rd party developer or NST.

The Punchout series is definitely due for a revival.  One of the reasons it probably hasn't gotten an update is that its developer, Nintendo IRD (formerly Nintendo R&D3) hasn't made a game in quite a while.  IRD specializes mostly in hardware, but they've dabbled in game development every once and a while.  Probably their most recognizable series are Punchout, StarTropics, and Pilotwings.  In fact, if I recall correctly, their last game was Pilotwings 64, which was a collaboration with Paradigm.  While Genyo Takeda (the head of IRD) has hinted that they may tackle a new software project in the future, Punchout's best bet at revival would be if it were outsourced (NST?  Retro?  Sega?).

I was just thinking about how fun 2 player punch out would be.  Mario would have to be the ref of course.  And have i thought up a good story line,  Little Mac decides to retire and his 3 sons enter boxing (each have different strenghts and weaknesses) and if you battle through a lot of great boxers (including super macho man, baldbull, and masked muscle) you fight against Little mac (this is would be the last match of his carrerr).  Wouldnt that be awesome?

I've seen a numer of posts around the net on Punch Out lately... good! With the release of a new Metroid, Punch Out is not at the top of my list of games I'd like to see a sequal for.

"Borrowing" it out to a 3rd party to developers might be a good idea (we'll see how FZero and Armada turn out first I guess). Namco? Sega? Both good arcade makers which Punch Out really is. Can you say Triforce? (They really need to put that to more use anyways.)

Heh . . . very nice ideas.  I'm not sure about the sons thing (although different playable characters would be very nice if done properly), but I've always thought that Little Mac would make a cool surprise ending boss character in a Punch-Out!! update.  He'd be smaller than most of the boxers you would have faced up to that point (thus making him harder to hit) and probably lightning quick.

Heh . . . wonder who would get the obligatory Glass Joe/Gabby Jay role?  Brittle Bones?  (I hope Nintendo or whoever does an update is better at coming up with names than I am )

Remember the Punch Out game on SNES ? Wasn't a very good game ...

The original Punch Out was a excellent game, and I have great memories of it. But some classic games, IMHO, shoudn't be updated to the next-gen systems, and Punch Out is one of them.

Even if a GC Punch Out is made, it'll never have the same magic it had at that time ... I don't see how a 3D one would recreate the Punch Out feel.

Ahh nostalgia ...

Think of the Star Wars movies before Episode 1, and how we felt a new one would be so nice ... and then the result.

WHAATTT?!
how can  you say Super Punch Out wasn't a very good game?!??!?!
It has some of the best gameplay of any game ever made.
It also had new moves like the fast punches move (basically a series of jabs)
and uppercuts for the left and right hands
each enemy required learning their specific patterns to win (just like all the old bosses in 8 bit and 16 bit titles, and to a lesser extent in todays games)

I didn't buy the game because I didn't think it was worth 50 bucks but when I actually got to play it at my friends house I was in shock and awe, this title is KICK ASS
I cannot believe at all that you say it wasn't a good game, can't believe that at all

I can say it wasn't a very good game because I, like everybody here, have something called "an opinion".

Taste differs Joeamis ... I didn't like it, you did. We're talking about videogames here, a subjective matter, so whether we like them or not is a matter of taste.
