Both the Wii and DS saw impressive sales in North America.

According to internal tracking numbers at Nintendo, the company sold more than 1.5 million Wii, DS and DSi units during the busy Thanksgiving shopping weekend. Additional sales data confirms that more than 550,000 Wii consoles were sold. More than 1 million DS units were sold, surpassing Game Boy Advance sales from 2002.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- NintendoÂ’s internal tracking numbers show that the company sold more than 1.5 million Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DSi™ video game systems combined in the United States during Thanksgiving Week. That works out to more than 150 Nintendo systems sold every minute continuously for the week – or more than 2.5 every second.

Nintendo estimates that during the week:

- more than 550,000 Wii home consoles sold, demonstrating that consumers nationwide have responded to the new suggested retail price of $199.99.   - more than 1 million Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi portable systems sold. This number surpasses the all-time hand-held hardware sales record set by Game Boy™ Advance during Thanksgiving Week 2002.

“Holiday shoppers are finding value in our productsÂ’ prices, and through a game-play experience that is unique to Nintendo,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of AmericaÂ’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

Note that the internal Nintendo of America numbers referenced in this release represent sales from Sunday, Nov. 22, through Saturday, Nov. 28.

Sounds good, but we need to compare this to the sales figures for the competition. The PS3 with its price drop and heavy advertising must have done reasonably well too. Hopefully Nintendo is still #1.

While the numbers come from VGchartz, the PS3 did around 400 K units sold during Black Friday, which should put it in third place.

Hence why I said that the only numbers I have come from VGchartz, meaning that they are not reliable and should be taken with a grain of salt.

It was more about how you worded the sentence, like the numbers were fact.
But now we have real estimates from Sony
Quote
SCEA comms boss Patrick Seybold’s confirmed 440,000 US PS3 sales for the week ending November 29. Big beans.

“The 2009 holiday season got off to an amazing start for PlayStation, with all key retailers showing a significant increase for PS3, PSP and key holiday titles over Black Friday and the holiday weekend,” said the exec in an emailed statement.

“PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09.”

and something from MS too.

According to Director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Aaron Greenberg, “biggest sales week of the year” good.

“Great #BlackFriday results just in, biggest sales week of the year for #Xbox360, more than 2xs previous week sales,” he tweeted.

So is Microsoft going to give us a real number?

My assumption is they did less than 440K, a.k.a. MICROSOFT IS TEH DOOMED

Sony had their best sales week ever, at 440,000 units.  Coming off a price drop and a redesigned system. Best Buy and Walmart (two of the largest retailers) also had pretty awesome exclusive bundles that had $100+ worth of goodies in them.

Meanwhile, the Wii *STILL* outsold the PS3.

Should be interesting to see next week's sales. ;)

Nintendo Wii U.S. Sales Slump in Thanksgiving Week

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co.’s U.S. sales of its flagship Wii console during Thanksgiving week tumbled after a 20 percent price reduction for the device failed to spur demand.

The company sold more than 550,000 Wii machines in the week ended Nov. 28, the world’s largest maker of video-game players said in a statement yesterday. That’s about 30 percent fewer than the almost 800,000 consoles Nintendo sold in the year- earlier period.

“These are weak numbers,” said Etsuko Tamura, a Tokyo- based analyst at Mizuho Investors Securities Co., which rates the stock “outperform.” “Wii sales are slumping.” Yasuhiro Minagawa, a spokesman at Kyoto-based Nintendo, today confirmed the Wii’s sales figure for the year-earlier period.

Nintendo shares fell as much as 2.7 percent in Osaka trading as the company failed to mirror PlayStation 3 maker Sony Corp. in reviving demand through price cuts. In October, Nintendo slashed its annual Wii-shipment forecast 23 percent after sales during the fiscal first half were less than a quarter of the previous full-year goal. The company also reduced the console’s price to $200 from $250.

Leave it to the morons that call themselves "analysts" to always be negative. They are the same way with stocks. The Wii still easily beat the competition, but analysts are upset because Wii didn't break the Thanksgiving sales record again.

The last comment is especially annoying, the Wii wasn't on life support like the PS3 was (especially here in the US, where the PS3 was outsold several times by the 9 year old PS2).

The price cut and the black holiday helped boost the Wiis sales, but the problem of the Wii lacking a diverse library of games still remains. Traditional gamers are more likely to pick up a PS3 or 360 because those systems have stuff other than Wii Fit and Wii Sports.

Nintendo needs to realize the problem and solve it or else this time next year they are going to be in even worse shape. Where are the games?!

At this rate, Nintendo won't even be around in January to have a presence at GDC.

Report: Nintendo Scaling Back Wii Production

According to a report from Nikkei, Nintendo has begun the process of reducing the number of Wiis being manufactured.

The report says that two Japanese companies - Mitsumi and Hosiden - are facing massive losses in revenue this year due to the "declining fortunes" of the Wii and a "drop-off in orders from Nintendo to assemble game systems".

Both companies are now staring at a drop in net profits of more than 50%.

It's funny. It took Nintendo years to ramp up Wii production. They sure cut it back quick enough.

It isn't too late for Nintendo to turn things around. I just don't understand what they've been doing. Have they just been raking money in and hoarding it? All they money should have went towards game development to ensure the Wii has a healthy and diverse library. So far all we see is non-game crap...
