Square, Warner Bros Battle for Eidos
« on: December 05, 2008, 09:31:19 AM »
Shortly after Eidos Interactive opened up for shareholder Warner Bros to buy it up, Square Enix looks to snatch up the British publisher.

 After a rough year, British publisher/developer Eidos Interactive is now seeking to be bought out. While most pundits figured EA or Ubisoft would pick up the struggling company, it appears that Western publisher Warner Bros and legendary Japanese company Square Enix will engage in a bidding war for Eidos.

Warner Bros has a leg up because they already own about 20% of Eidos' shares and there are no longer any restrictions on Warner Bros buying a controlling interest in the struggling company, which owns the rights to franchises such as Tomb Raider and Hitman.

However, Square Enix has recently revealed interest in Eidos after their president, Yoichi Wada, visited Denmark's IO Studios, which is famous for the Hitman series. Square Enix's interest is a little surprising but, after this year's Tokyo Game Show keynote where Wada decried Japanese developers for letting Western developers take their thunder, the company seems to be trying to reach out to other territories and properties.

While Warner Bros will most likely buy out Eidos, Square Enix might buy specific properties, like the Hitman franchise, or studios.

Well, SE ownership has worked out surprisingly well for Taito so far, so I have to say I'm interested in what their influence could do for Eidos.  Besides, WB doesn't exactly have a glowing history in the video game industry.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I hope Eidos is bought so there's no more Tomb Raider games, and no more Hitman games.

If Hitman is to be brought back, it should be a proper MURDER SIMULATOR with Wii controls.

Well the problem with Taito is that they were just underfunded...Eidos is just, well, crap...Who knows what SE is thinking here?  =\

Maybe they're thinking "Tifa vs. Lara Hyper Pillow Fighting."
