Surround Sound 5.1 help!
« on: February 21, 2008, 11:50:36 AM »
Recently I purchased a Yamaha RX-V661 receiver with both optical and HDMI hookups, I recently got things set up and tried to play a game (Raw vs Smackdown 200, what I noticed is that the two rear (It is a 5.1 set up) speakers were not giving off any sound. Now the odd thing is that when I play a Blu-ray movie the rear speakers work perfectly. Has anyone ran into this problem, I've tried outputting the audio through both HDMI and optical and still the same problem. I wish I had my Xbox 360 to test it, but I don't.

Try a different game?  Check the game settings?  Check the console settings?

Does the game support Dolby Digital?  Dolby Digital 5.1?

If the game doesn't support Dolby Digital 5.1 but is sending a digital signal, sometimes it will just send stuff through your left and right channel and not even your center, let alone your rears.

My guess, is like Pro said, the game doesn't support 5.1.  You'll find as you play more games, that this is the case with a ton of games, and the best option is tell your receiver to use Pro Logic II instead for those games (as they usually support that just fine).

If you want to make sure the speakers work you can download some 5.1 test videos.  If it works for those it must be the game.  I'd link you to the one I used but it seems to be 404'd now.

You know, had a similar problem around 2002.  I would play Rogue Leader in surround and the central speaker would barely make any noise at all.  It was only that sound system and no others I've played it on ever had that problem.

C'est bizarre.
