The article and his quote phrase it as it meaning people looking for a Wii may choose a PS3 instead if they can't find one, but neither seems to realize that he's conceding the fact that Nintendo is going to sell every unit of the Wii that's out there, increasing its already huge sales lead, and not only does this not upset him, he's happy about it.

I like how they are still tooting the "We aren't competing with Nintendo" horn, even though they lost one of their biggest Japanese franchises to Wii! Sounds like the Wii is ::gasp:: competing to me!

Other than what happened with the hardware in Japan this week, Sony hasn't been competing with Nintendo
So its not like he was lying

A CEO will never admit that they are in despair over their company's marketshare. Privately he is probably not happy about the PS3 beingg so far behind, but he can't admit that because the shareholders would be pissed off.

Even Nintendo's officials never showed despair at how bad the Gamecube was performing.

Stringer also believes that Wii shortages may help boost PS3 hardware sales over Christmas, as gamers unable to get Nintendo's console will look for other options instead. He commented, "It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware."

I think the Wii's shortage helps the 360 more than it helps the PS3. The 360 is cheaper, it has a lot more games, and is just cooler than the PS3 at this point.

Well at least Nintendo was making profits off of Gamecube. Sony is still hemorrhaging money.

A failing console that makes more money than the competitors is not a failure in the eyes of shareholders, compared to a popular 100+ million selling black hole.

Nintendo's dedication to profitability, while making them conservative on the bleeding-edge-hardware scale, is actually one of the things that enables them to have such a dedication to quality and inventiveness. It's ironic, but Nintendo's ability to remain profitable throughout even the GC generation means that they don't live hand-to-mouth, but can afford to develop good, healthy, long-term practices in videogaming and possibly weather any future rough patches along the way.

You are right... Maybe Sony wants to sell less consoles so they don't lose money from each sale. It's an odd way of doing business...

To be fair when Nintendo was routinely getting creamed by Sony they did the same thing.

The PS3 is just f*cked because it's too expensive and they can't lower the price without taking a bath.  Sony has put themselves in a situation where they can't win.  Maybe they should just release a remote rip-off for the PS2 and market that against the Wii instead.  Considering the PS2 still sells well, already has a huge library, and like the Wii is not on the cutting edge of graphics technology it might stand a better chance at competing.

Why would you get a PS3 if you couldn't find a Wii? I would just keep waiting for a Wii.

In related news...  Sony PR spin FTW:

Quote

October 2007 was a strong month for the PlayStation brand, according to NPD data.  Overall the PlayStation brand showed a 39% increase in total retail dollars generated year-over-year in the US with total sales of $353.4 million for the month.  Overall, SCEA's console business remains strong with combined sales of PS3 and PS2 for the month of October at $258.5 million in revenue.

The PLAYSTATION 3 sold 121K units at retail for the month of October.  SCEA expects a great deal of momentum moving forward this holiday and beyond with the availability of new PS3 hardware and pricing.  Based on internal data, the company is already seeing a great spike in sales with a 192% lift for the PS3 over the past two weeks.   In fact, as reported by Howard Stringer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sony Corporation of America, 100,000 units of the PLAYSTATION 3 were sold at retail just last week.

To add to this, the PS3 software lineup continues to strengthen as we head into the holiday season with must-have titles like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune,  Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, Assassin's Creed,  Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, Warhawk, and Heavenly Sword on store shelves. Also, upcoming third party exclusives hitting just in time for the holidays, such as Unreal Tournament III and Haze, will only add to our success this season.

The PSP sold 286K units at retail for the month of October. Overall sales of the PSP are up 120% year over year due to the popularity of the slimmer and lighter PSP , which includes video-out capabilities for $169. And with 24 first and third-party software titles being released this holiday season, such as SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strike and Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of The Lions,as well as new spots for the wildly popular  â€śDude, get your own” campaign, the PSP will undoubtedly continue to gain momentum through the coming months.

Seven years into it's life cycle the PS2 remains the best-selling gaming platform ever released, selling 183K units for the month of October. The release of games such as BUZZ! The Mega Quiz, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and the just released limited-edition PS2 bundled with SingStar Pop will continue to make the console a perfect choice for families interested in social games and will be hugely popular this holiday season.

62,000 more people bought a PS2 than bought a PS3 in October? They might've been better off slapping a blu-ray player onto the PS2 and calling it a day.

But that would be a serious problem for their goal of forcing blu-ray on consumers.

Although, maybe it would be somehow possible to integrate blu-ray into a new model of the PS2. Naturally it would be more expensive than the current $129 model, but if they can keep it around the price of the Wii and with a Wii-remote ability to it, then I think they'd have a winner. The PS2's library is insanely large and would crush the Wii if they went this route.

I don't know what they'd call it though, since the name PS3 is already taken.

PS3 Sales Triple

For the lazy: The $400/Spiderman 3 unit boosted sales to 100,000 consoles in the week ending Nov 11. Sony CEO also vaguely thanks a Wii shortage for the boost too.

The numbers for the month will be interesting, IF they can maintain this surge for the month. But then again, it's November so sales will go up for everybody regardless.

That's according to SCEA's Howard Stringer, not NPD or any real accounting group. I bet it's more like "shipped" 100,000, because my Best Buy has TONS of them.

Unless Sony has changed policy without me hearing about it, those are definitely Shipped numbers. Sony's numbers are always units shipped.

I could believe 100,000 sold.  They already had a good amount of stock out there and where I'm at the old/better versions have all been bought recently.
