Friend code forum question.
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:24:51 AM »
Is there a way we could hide the friend code forum from people who don't have 50 posts?  Maybe just give all regular users a one point minumum and lock it to people who don't have that one point?  Something, anything, to keep out the new NWR riff-raff that posts for a day, waits around for a day, and never comes back?  If it actually attracted people here to post regularly, I wouldn't suggest this, but Pokemon did nothing to attract new regulars, except Mashiro, so I'm going to guess this will work about the same way.  I figure this way, we won't need those "absolutely only" friendcodes rule, and I won't feel bad suggesting ways to get online to work, which user has what nick-name in the game, and I won't have to hunt through pages of friend codes to find a regular's name.

I may be the only one that feels that way, but I doubt I'm not.

Also, Smash_Brother is a meanie. :p

I agree there needs to be something, those friend code threads contain way too many people I don't recognize and it's annoying to have to pick through them.

The friend code threads are designed as a place to get as many codes as possible.

Some people really like to max their lists.  NWR has a lot more readers than it does forum regulars and its important to accommodate them too.  It is well within your power to only add the people you want to add.

Can we make a hidden specialty forum for something like people with points or posts, or something?

Because really, I don't like even going in there, but if I wanted to find someone in the pokemon thread, it would take a year or so.

Never-mind.  I'll just make a funhouse thread for FC's for the game.  Unless someone else beats me to it.

It is well within your power to only add the people you want to add.

Not according to your rules.

Because Brawl is limited to 64 slots on the friend code list, it isvery important that you give everyone a fair chance to have friends added to their list.  To facilitate this, you must add at least the friend codes that are on the same page as the one you post on.  Once that is done, you are free to add whoever else you would like.  Remember to check back to this thread often to add more codes to your list!

Right, well, Windy doesn't post on our forums very much, so I'll be ignoring that part, like I was going to ignore it anyways.  That one dude I tried to play two nights ago was lucky we just wanted to play someone quickly, or else I'd have ignored him.

Yeah, it was an edit by Windy...

I'm not sure I really agree with it either and we can't control what you do anyway.

I don't actually post a lot in the forums but I do read a lot. I just only feel the need to post when I actually have something to contribute to the conversation that people haven't said yet or I just flat out disagree with someone's post. I guess I would prefer if I wasn't left out of the loop because of my low post count, but that's just because I'm on the wrong side of the rule, I can understand the idea of not wanting to add people who aren't regulars.

What I would rather see is perhaps a more region specific organization of friend codes. whether this would be done with more than one thread or not, I don't know, but I live in Toronto, Canada and have been flat out not allowed to join friend matches with some of the people on my list. That might be because nintendo's servers are so busy, but still it would be helpful to know how close people are to me  and how much lag to expect.

I like Armak's idea, and for a game as big as Brawl, we could do regional friend code threads.

My proposal for regions:

Pacific Northwest (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, British Columbia)
Southwest (California, Nevada, Arizona, half of Mexico)
The New World (New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Quebec)
South
Midwest
Great Lakes (Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Ontario)
Canada (all provinces, but especially Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, plus Alaska)
South America
Africa
Europe
Asia
Australia

People can post in more than one if they feel they live in between the geographical lines, and everyone is free to add whoever will add them back via a complex series of PMs

THOUGHTS?

"People can post in more than one if they feel they live in between the geographical lines, and everyone is free to add whoever will add them back via a complex series of PMs"

This is what I figured. I mean the regulars on here talk to each other often enough to just trade their codes via PM, or just look the person up in one of the region threads. The regions look pretty good, I mean generalizing all of Canada when it's bigger than the US is kind of funny, but it's good for the most part.

The only other concern that I can think of is that we don't have a whole lot of people in the friend code  thread right now, so how would it divide into these regions? I have a feeling there would be more than one region thread with only 2 or 3 people in it. Tough luck for them?

My intention with the Canada region is for it to be a "central Canada" thread, with other areas of Canada close to the US, like Vancouver, provinces bordering the Great Lakes, etc, combined into the other groups. If the forum likes this idea, more suggestions for "districting" are welcome!

Those people who live outside of the most populous Smash area of the world that actively posts on this board (the U.S.) are better served by small threads, since they know who is close to them and is best to brawl with. They're, as always, free to consort with others. The whole point of districting is to make the groups of folks as small as possible.

A)  If Illinois is considered Great Lakes, what the Hell counts as Midwest?

B)  According to YOU distance doesn't affect lag.  So why do we need regional threads within the same country?

I don't think distance affects it, but I'm not the only person here and I could be wrong. Regional threads would help foreigners (Canadians etc) more than Americans, I think, but dividing the country into bits would at least help us PROVE how distance affects lag and to what degree.

Jeez, it's like an inquisition in here.

And bud, you wanna move Illinois into the group with fucking NEBRASKA go ahead, have fun. I figured you'd wanna be with Indiana and Michigan.

Just use Google Maps and figure out all the surrounding city-states within a particular radius.

But it might not matter (or be totally clear as to what's going on) anyway since some ISP don't necessarily have their main servers in the region one lives in.

Example: Charter Communications
- Provides internet service in parts of Northern California
- All traffic is actually routed to their main SUPER SATELLITE LAZER in Washington State

okay goddammit cool your jets

I was grouping the westernmost part of the Midwest with the Easternmost part of the "west," allowing the "great lakes" parts of the Midwest to have their own group cause they're more populous and represented on the boards.

speaking as one who lived in KS and NE, we can just leave out anyone from those regions in the first place, the what 12 people between the 2 states that have decent internet aren't likely to have a Wii and/or a copy of Smash Bros. in the first place.
