Sega Rally for PS3
« on: September 21, 2007, 08:29:55 AM »
so I downloaded the demo after seeing IGN Uk's rating of 8.8 for Sega Rally...

It's quite disapointing. Everything from controls to graphics are inferior to Colin McRae's DiRT (condolences to his family...)   I played a dirt course with the Mitubishi Lancer. There was horrible pop-ins on the track. Like 20 feet in front of the car, the track section would change from a textureless baby blue section to mud... The controls were weird. They were very "floaty". I could barely keep the card straight, it would fishtail back and forth.  There was a paved section on the track and I found the car fishtailed the exact same way as on the dirt part of the track.  The graphics were pretty good but nothing too special. DiRT looks and drives way better than Sega rally.  Anybody else try out the demo?

Sega Rally is way, way better than the awfully mediocre DiRT. I'm not sure how you're experiencing problems with the draw distance, because I've tried the demo on both my 360 and PS3, and have seen no such problems with either version. No tearing either, which is something that plagues DiRT on both formats. The handling is obviously incredibly arcade-oriented, but that's what's I want from Sega Rally. It's always been an arcade game, not a simulation. This latest incarnation retains a similar handling model to the previous entries, and that's just fine. The track deformation is also pretty impressive, and has a genuine effect on the handling. You can bed your wheels into the grooves cut into the surface by other cars, and that helps to keep a good line on corners.

I doubt I'll pay full price for it, as I've got plenty of other games to play first. However, I'd definetly consider it strongly when it hits the bargain bins.

I downloaded and played the demo today - Dirt has it on graphics, but Sega Rally is a little easier to control, probably because it's an "arcade" racer. I didn't think it felt "floaty" or anything like that.
