Elite Beat Agents Visit Japan
« on: June 21, 2007, 04:17:43 AM »
A limited time Ouendan 2 downloadable creates series crossover.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=13676

For two weeks from June 28th through July 11th, Ouendan 2 owners in Japan will be able to take their DS cards to in-store DS Stations and download new characters into their games.  These characters are none other than iNiS's other DS mascots, the Elite Beat Agents.

Once downloaded, an Elite Beat Agents shield icon appears on the difficulty selection screen, and once activated, the Agents replace the Ouendan's 3D models in single and multiplayer.  The oft-requested crossover also includes Neko the cat as a playable character.

Woooooot. I wonder if it changes their dance animations or anything else. If I see one, I'll definitely hit it up.

Awesome. This made me smile, which is good because I'm having one of the sh*ttiest days ever right now.

Their pose in the screenshot looks exactly like an Ouendan move, so I'm guessing they're not going to do the dance moves.

Still, I want this. Don't know how I'll get it in the U.S., but I want it.

This means they can now use EBA in SSBB without the Japanese being clueless.

For those who are interested but don't know yet, There is an Action Replay code to unlock the EBA.
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

I never considered that before, but the agents in Brawl would be awesome.  You could control all three at once, sort of like Ice Climbers.

It would be damn cool, but the real reason I'd want to see them is so iNiS can get some free press at long last.

Their games are awesome but never get the true credit they deserve.

Dammit! You stole my post!

All kidding aside, I agree. The EBA are far more universally appealing than the Ouendan. The EBA were inspired by the Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters and the Men in Black. Those are movies everyone knows and love, making the agents very recognizable. Hell, even if someone is completely clueless about the EBA they will likely say "Who are those Blues Brothers like characters?". Not to mention the image of an agent is universal as well. People have seen the Matrix films so they know what the typical government agent looks like.

The Ouendan, on the other hand, are far too inspired by the Japanese culture to make it universally appealing enough. As SB told me once, the Ouendan might either remind people of Nazis or be completely clueless about it.

So if Nintendo wants a representation of iNiS in Brawl, the EBA should be it.

Ultimate reason for EBA in Brawl rather than Ouendan:
Martial Arts fighting is common. Dance fighting, however, is hilarious.

Next time you play EBA, imagine the dance moves as attacks. It's awesome.

Or just watch Zoolander, and you can see what they mean.  Though, if you listen to me about this, you'll have to sit through all of Zoolander.

In that case, just listen to LH.

Agent J would be Brawl's Eddy Gordo :p .

But yeah, I can imagine some of their dance moves being turned into attacks. The agents kick high in their routine!

The AR code unlocks this mode

I can pretty much give a summary of what I have seen:
They are just skins in normal ouendan non rival stages
on last 2 stages, the rivals are replaced with the Cat leading the team instead of normal "difficulty" baised guy

But the rumor is this "patch" unlocks audio samples, as they are found by hacking
but arnt unlocked by AR (yet)

I don't know if embedding is allowed so i'll link, but two friends and i created a special little video parodying the beloved Elite Beat Ouendan, thats the original Japanese version. We put are own special twist on it for a math class, ENJOY!

Okay, so I bought an Action Replay, mostly for this, and I have to say, it's a fun little easter egg, but not worth buying an Action Replay if you aren't going to use it for anything else. Fortunately, you can also cheat in other games, so if you've been thinking about getting it, it might be worthwhile.

To confirm what the AR code does:
-EBA replace the Ouendan in all levels, both the Black Ouendan and the Blue Ouendan
-Divas replace the Cheer Girls in the same way
-In the final two stages, EBA replace the black team, and the Cat leads the blue team
-(I haven't had a chance to check the multiplayer, sorry. Presumably it unlocks just J and the Cat as playable)

What the AR code does not do:
-It does not change any of the 2-D cutscene art
-It does not change any of the dance moves. It's cool seeing the EBA do the Ouendan moves, but now their microphones (yes, they're still holding them) are even more useless
-It does not affect the "idle" pose, so the EBA pose differently based on which Ouendan they're replacing
-It does not replace the voices (although I wonder if it might do so in multiplayer, since it's just J, and his voice was apparently on the cart)
-The EBA will not appear on the title screen or difficulty selection screen vignettes.

If anybody has any questions or wants me to try something, let me know. Also, if anyone can confirm that the "official" patch does anything different, I'd be interested to hear what. I'm pretty sure the AR code just triggers the "Unlock EBA Mode" button, so I doubt there'd be any difference.

EBA also visits Europe, i.e. the game finally saw a release here. I won't buy it because my DS is muted whenever I'm in public which is most of the time I use it and people told me EBA needs the sound.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.
