The GTS - What can/does happen behind the curtain?
« on: April 29, 2007, 06:58:42 AM »
NOTE:  This is not a thread to setup trades!  Although the mods may want to get around to creating a forum (Hey call it the GTS ) for such a thing.

So I've been thinking about Pokemon's GTS and was wondering what kind of tricks Nintendo could pull with the system to keep "trainers" happy.  Think about it.  Poor Bill is having a hard time catching his beloved Pikachu and decides to try his luck at the GTS and trade for one and puts up his lvl 9 Biddoff to try and get one.  Now eventually there may be someone willing to accept the terms... but what if Nintendo themselves provide the trade?

All they would need are Pokemon and trainer name pools and an algorithm to determine a "reasonable" trade.  Obviously trying to trade a lvl1 starter for a legendary wouldn't be "reasonable"... but a Biddoff for a Pikachu with similar levels is fair.  Both are common.  If Bill's request in this example goes unanswered after a certain amount of time, Nintendo could jump in and "trade".

I'm also thinking that they may use a name pool to scrub the names of trainers and Pokemon in the GTS.  When someone sees Bill's Biddoff they really see a Biddoff called Biddy and from a trainer called Frank.  Maybe only scrub the names if they are odd (lots of spaces, special characters, match keywords)

Well the example above wasn't entirely fictional in the end... I went and put up a Biddoff for a Pikachu and it succeded.  I got a lvl9 Pikachu with JAP name and trainer that was 'caught' in a grey and white ball with yellow markings.  Doing a quick search it looks like it's an "ultra ball" with a 2x capture chance... are Pikachus that hard to catch?  I'm convinced this isn't from a trainer...

Isn't it possible that a Japanese player has tons of money in the game and only purchases ultra balls?  Then that he wanted an American Biddoff for the English name, so he went a quickly caught a Pikachu for you?

I guess... but the thoughts in the original post stand.

I try to be fair on what I ask for and what I will trade for it.  I try and trade rare/uncommon for rare/uncommon (or version exclusives).

I did get a Skorupi from someone who wanted a female combee.  I was happy to oblige since both are not common.  I got my first female combee through a deposit trade so I could get a vespiqueen.  After breeding the male and female for another combee (which happened to be female, I traded that for my skorupi.)  Then I managed to catch a skorupi on my own which I then put up for a croagunk, which is uncommon/rare.

The only pain for the GTS is that you can only trade pokemon you have seen, so you can't ask for legendaries at the start of the game (or Munchlax who I want.)
