No Megaman in Brawl...
« on: December 22, 2007, 07:44:24 AM »
...Says Inafune, his creator.

Well, I really do love Super Smash Brothers. It’s a great series…but, Nintendo hasn’t asked me yet if they can use Mega Man in their game. I’m still waiting…we have a little bit of time left, it’s not coming out for another few months. They might get around to asking us if we’d like to put Mega Man in Super Smash Brothers. Maybe if somebody from Nintendo is listening to this podcast, they’ll give me a call.

I would say that this is a bummer, but remember, Sega also kept denying that Sonic was in Brawl, going as far as to say that the Olympics games is a more appropriate cross over for Mario and Sonic. Also, with Megaman with a highly requested character in Japan I doubt Nintendo failed to ask him if he wanted Megaman in Brawl.

Worst case scenario, we get another Capcom character. Someone from Resident Evil, maybe?

Last I checked, Nintendo said 3rd parties need to go to THEM, not the other way around.

But yeah, Sega made similar noises about Sonic so this doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Wait, was Inafune asked a question if Megaman was in Brawl or not.  If he was asked if Megaman was in Brawl then he'd have to deny it like Sega did with Sonic.  As we've seen, only Sakurai has the authority to reveal new characters, and so if Inafune was asked if Megaman was in the game he'd have to say no right now because that's the only exceptable answer.

If he said yes, then he would have been killed by Nintendo hired hitmen.  If he said maybe, that would also confirm Megaman is in the game and he'd be killed again.  Saying no is the only answer he can say in this situation and not get in any trouble from Nintendo.

So really, even though Inafune is the creator of Megaman, Sakurai is the only one allowed to confirm him.

I don't know why, but the idea of Sakurai busting through Inafune's office and smacking the living daylights out of him for revealing Megaman too early is too funny...

But isn't it more of a capcom call than his since they own the copyrights to him? so he could possible not know....

Even still, I rather have Zero be in brawl over x/megeman, since megaman just a clone of Kirby breeded with Samus...

Well, if you pay close attention to what he said, he never said the MegaMan wasn't in SSBB, just that Nintenedo never asked him if they could use MM in SSBB.
Since he would be NDA'd the best way to dodge the question is to tell the truth in the only way he can without actually confirming or denying anything.

He may have called Nintendo or his supervisors could have done it for him, but either way Nintendo never called him and asked permission to put MM in SSBB.
Which would mean that he wasn't necessarily lying, he just wasn't telling the whole truth.

I don't think anything is set in stone.

If he hasn't said, "Megaman isn't in Brawl." then I agree that it's still up in the air.

and would it be hard to put him in? As said he's a cross between samas and kirby. He would be balanced from the get go

I don't see why people expect him to have any Kirby-like traits. Sure, he gains powers from enemies in his games, but he doesn't do it constantly like Kirby does. I'd expect him to use a preselected set of moves inspired by powerups from the series, just like Samus or Link.

I don't want Megaman in Brawl. Viewtiful Joe would be a much better Capcom character for Smash Bros.

Except that the slowing down time and speeding up time effects would do any other player injustice on the screen...

We've had this talk about VJ in Brawl, and I still don't understand why people think he has to play exactly like he does in his games. It doesn't make any sense! I mean, of course his moves would get reworked to acknowledge his V-watch powers without actually using them. Why the hell wouldn't they?

I've played exactly one Megaman game in my life for like 20 minutes so I'm as neutral on this as they come.

I don't think this statement proves anything:

1. Nintendo made it clear that 3rd parties need to come to THEM, not the other way around. Inafune saying "They haven't called me" makes no sense and is likely a red herring.

2. Sega gave similar market speak about Sonic, saying that "M&S Olympics is a BETTER crossover", implying that the SSBB crossover wouldn't happen.

3. Inafune cannot announce Megaman in Brawl (if he's in). It HAS to be Nintendo, so anything he says on the matter HAS to be misleading and suggest that Megaman is NOT in Brawl, just like Sega did.

Think about it this way: if Megaman is NOT in Brawl, why wouldn't Inafune just say, "I'm sorry, Megaman isn't in Brawl."? I'm quite certain that he understands a fighting game which is two months from release doesn't have time for an additional character so the whole "maybe they'll call me" bit is completely unrealistic.

Bottom line, people in the industry have a way of dodging the question in which they say a lot without actually saying anything at all. Inafune here hasn't said anything at all so I wouldn't put Megaman's inclusion in Brawl out of the question.

Uhh.... yeah, with a couple of days of dev time the best you could hope for is Samus with a pallet swap... and even that would account for a major delay in terms of the eventual ship date at this point for the Japanese release.

hey sonic is in it. For all we know they pulled a pacman/miyamoto. They made the character without permission a long time ago and only now do they go through with the formalities of licensing.

Also didn't in some interview there was confirmation there would be one other 3rd party character outside Sonic and Snake
