Radio Free Nintendo - Episode 35
« on: January 19, 2007, 05:54:08 AM »
Hey, it's still technically "tonight".

Sales data rule.

Episode 35: The Maybe of Multi-Platform

AAC Format

MP3 Format

Odeo format will be available tomorrow!

Karl, Jonny, and Dan are experts at dissecting and interpreting NPD sales data...or at least they enjoy doing it.  This show starts off with a temporarily temporary RFN theme song, mostly improvised and entirely performed by Jonny's mouth and hands.  Hrm.  We also have two great pieces of listener mail with discussion, and a Virtual Console rumor is trounced upon.

After an inexplicably creepy song by Stan, the podcast gang returns to discuss the problems with and future of multi-platform games on Wii.  To summarize their findings: let's all hope the Wii is a huge sales success or PSP miraculously finds its legs.  Listen all the way to the end for perverse, out-of-context hilarity!

Credits:

This podcast was edited by Stan Ferguson. Anti-piracy song also performed by Stan Ferguson.  RFN quasi-theme song performed by Jonathan Metts.  Virtual Console Mondays commercial performed by Karl Castaneda.

I'm glad the podcast is here. I was a bit worried when it didn't show up earlier in the week.

I just want to clarify that the "stinger" at the very end of the podcast is taken ENTIRELY out of context.  I was saying that I want to get Evan back on the podcast soon because it's been a long time since he and I recorded one together.

Also, feedback on the "theme song" would be appreciated.  I had a very loose idea for what I wanted to do, and then most of it was made up during that one take (including the percussion).  If we decide to keep using it, I'll probably record a more polished version with a horn section and the Boulder Chamber Orchestra and Carlos Santana.

The "commercials" were too loud.  I had to change the volume in iTunes from full to half whenever they came on.

Yeah, so I've heard.  My apologies, but they sounded pretty much the same on my laptop--however that only means the laptop has trouble playing things loud.  Won't happen again!

I loved the last segment regarding multi-platform games, but we'll get to that in a minute...

What's the problem of GBA's still selling considerably after all these years? The GBA is the system that has carried Nintendo when the 'Cube started to drop/choke. If the market is still viable, do it! Would it be better if they pulled a Microsoft and just kill its last system right when the new one pops up?

The last segment has to be one of the most honest opinions and insight/analysis I've heard in a while. I'm still on the fence whether to get Marvel UA, but if its really that un-intuitive, I'll wait for the eventual sequel.

I've noticed that EA sport's Big games (Def Jam and NBA Street) have been announced for the 360/PS3, but no Wii version. But so far, SSX Blur is a Wii exclusive, supposedly tailored to the Wii controls. The announcement of two different versions of the Godfather supports this (Not to mention that there's a Godfather game on a Nintendo system.). What if Rockstar made an exlcusive GTA game in the vein of Liberty City/Vice City stories on the PSP? Think about it...

P.S iPhone FTW!

Djunknown, thanks for the comments.  I don't think you should wait for a Marvel: UA sequel; unless they completely change the game design itself, it's probably going to adopt the same or only slightly enhanced control scheme on Wii.  There's probably no other way to do it except to enable Classic Controller support (which I would be fine with...).

The issue is not really that Marvel: UA's Wii controls are designed poorly, it's that the game itself is inherently a bad fit for the Wii controller.  There are way too many functions to map to the existing buttons, and if those functions had simply been left out, the game would be crippled.  The developer had no choice but to use gestures for some moves, but due to the variety of superhero powers, it would have been insane to map a unique gesture to each move.  (Supposedly they tried this at one point and it was impossible to keep track of all the gestures.)  So boiling everything down to five simple gestures made the game playable, but in most cases it eliminated any correspondence between the gesture and the subsequent move performed.

Yay, Crimm did a follow up question on my question from last episode!

I think Jonny is being a little pessimistic about future third party support, but with the Cube's track record, one can't blame him. Ubisoft is making money off the Wii, and I'm sure the other third parties are in the black as well. At the least we should see some sequels of the new games we have so far on the Wii:

Elebits 2
Tony Hawk Downhill Jam 2
Red Steel 2
Raving Rabids 2 (something tells me we won't have Rayman in the sequel)

Oh, and When is the Radio Free Nintendo Sings the Blues Album coming out?

I'd like to see Evan in another Podcast, He's the staffer we love to hate, but he brings an energy to the show.

I really like Marvel Ultimate Alliance but I have to agree about the controls.  If you have a 360 or if the Wii is the only platform you have it is still well worth playing.  The control will eventual become pseudo second nature, more then those funny symbols on the PS controllers.  Also my main character, Moon Knight, was the only character who didn't get any specific items for him and I couldn't find his disc and I wanted to know more about him but trust me he rocks.  Especially at later levels, Boomerang, Lunar Eclipse, and Nunchuks rocks.

I liked the harmonica bits. Please go ahead, a change in theme song would be most welcome. In fact, I specifically listened to this episode because I thought there was going to be a new theme song, only to be disappointed to find my ears bleeding once again. No offense, but the Jason Ricci (or whoever) song you're using now makes the music in Excite Truck sound good by comparison.
