[GameCube] Horrible picture with s-video
« on: January 05, 2007, 08:51:12 AM »
Hi,

I just got an s-video cable from Ebay (third party) so I turned on my GameCube (which is a US model, so NTSC) and gave the new cable a try, hoping for the best.
Alas...the picture quality is HORRIBLE with that s-video cable!! It's much much worse than the original cable, the colors are all washed out
I'm using the S-video cable through a SCART adapter, could this affect the picture quality? (although I don't have any other choice, as my tv is a 15" cr*ppy CRT tv).
Sure, the whole thing was less than 10 euros ('bout 13 bucks) including shipping but still, that sucks...
Does anyone here use an s-video cable and has/had the same problem??

The fact that you're running S-video through SCART is entirely the problem.

S-video should be used on a TV that's designed to accept s-video (Japenese and North American TV, typically).  You're trying to force pure NTSC into a PAL set, and in principle they don't agree.

The only reasonable solution is to get a US TV.

Oh... I don't get why they would put an s-video entry on that SCART adapter then...

LOL, mmkay, not really an option for me...

And this scenario will also happen with my Wii if I use an s-video cable?!

Time for a new TV! (or a PAL Wii) =D

On some older video editing equipment and video cameras, they could output PAL video thru s-video cables.  But that obviously wasn't for everyone, since Europe eventually adopted SCART and RGB connections for their TVs rather than s-video.  That's why the adapter exists.

The funniest thing (well, you could say that...) is I was actually considering a new tv, possibly an LCD one but small since I don't have much room (15" max).
I bought the one I have now when the GameCube came out 5 years ago!

Oh I see, you sure know a bunch of stuff when it comes to video cables/standards!

Thanks for the help, now I guess I only have my eyes to cry! haha (oh and the original cr*ppy cable to play my GC, as always...)

You were right: it was the SCART adapter that was the problem.
I tried to hook up the GC on my living room tv (which has a native s-video entry) and it works fine.
Meh, guess I need a new tv now, for the Wii as well...

Hey, don't rejoice so soon, I have another question for you, please! lol
I found this (sorry it's in French and there's no English version available).
It has basically 3 SCART connections, 1 RCA and 1 S-video and you can hook-up the whole thing to the tv with a SCART connection.
Do you think that would work if I use my s-video cable with that? or am I gonna get the same results as using it through the SCART adapter?
I thought it might work because I believe the s-video plug is like the one I'd find on a tv, right? (i.e. not running through a SCART connection)
That'd be awesome if you could help me out
Thanks.

If it's as inexpensive as I think it is, then it's just a multi-tap rather than a true NTSC>PAL converter.

I can't read FRANCH but i don't believe it'll solve your problem.

Ok, I finally caved in and bought a new tv! haha
I went for a 15" Samsung LCD (didn't wanna spend too much and I don't have enough room for a big tv, sadly).
The Wii using s-video looks fine on it (can't use component, it doesn't have a component input).
I just need to get used to LCD now.
