Would this work for Wii
« on: November 26, 2006, 09:11:33 PM »
I'm connected to the internet through a router (I live with three other guys) and have no way of hooking up my Wii to the net as is. My question: would I absolutely NEED to buy the Nintendo Wi-Fi adapter to hook up to the net, or could I use this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833156152

I would love to buy a third party adapter for $17 instead of Nintendo's for $35. Could anybody help with some info? Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry for posting this topic here. I just noticed there's actually a Wi-Fi specific forum, but I've never noticed it before.

They're supposed to work. I have no specific experience with that one but it should be fine.

This is a little off topic but I saw a NDS wifi usb adapter. Would this work with the Wii as well or just the DS?  It seems so much easier to find in my area than the actual Wii adapter.

much thanks

I remember reading that, yes, the DS adapter WILL work with the Wii...but don't quote me on that.

I was looking into this too - I don't think that USB adapter will work. It's meant for PCs to be able to receive wireless connections. The Nintendo USB dongle is special - it connects to the DS and allows it to go online. You would need a router or the dongle to take Wii online..

Damnit! Why couldn't they just have added an Ethernet port onto the Wii, why?! So now, if I want to go online I'll have to spend $35 for their dumb USB-Adapter?

You could wait until January when Nintendo sells their Ethernet-to-USB adapter for the wii on thei website...
