Topic: what if Wii don't CONNECT?

Alright, I have no Wii.  I don' think I will be able to find one until after christmas.  The people around my area are acting like animals fighting over merchandise.  My many attempts have been very frustrating but it's given me time to get prepared.

I currently have dial-up and want to switch to DSL connection soon -somewhat because I know Wii needs to be online, at least to get the most out of it.   However, are we required to connect?  What are the system updates Nintendo sends out?  Am I able to use Wii for a little while (asssuming I actually can find one) or does not updating lead to operating problems, system errors, etc?

The only thing you will be missing that could be important is the ability to back up your game saves on an SD card.  Also, I sure as hell hope Nintendo will be improving the SD support over time.  Before buying high speed solely for the Wii updates, you should look into taking it somewhere where you could borrow their internet connection, as the updates are a one time thing.

You can keep the system offline for its whole lifespan theoretically.  However you will miss out on all VC games, including Wiicade.com's free games (check em out Wii based online flash games).  I don't think any of the updates are complete requirements.

My original Wii could not access online features due to the first firmware update that "bricked" my system.  All the games played fine, I just couldn't download VC games and what not.

If you planned on using a USB Hard drive, or keyboard/mouse, etc you won't be able to use them unless u somehow got a firmware update cd which i don't think Nintendo is doing.  I'd suggest Cable or DSL, online gaming will be fun.

I recommend DSL for the sole reason that it is LEAGUES better than dialup...

Seriously, I got DSL last summer and I've been in love with it since. Also, online games WILL come soon, so might as well be ready.

DSL has never been able to reach my location, and likely never will until SBC has some sort of nation-wide WiFi broadcaster.  They had intended to bring fiberoptics through my area this winter and scrapped the idea.

Pale, thats a great idea, for some reason I thought I'd have to be on my connection (dial-up has kept me tied down).  I can do online stuff at a friends house.  But that leads me to another question.

I know Wii has internal memory, but I thought it was for Mii, channels, VC, and system setting type things, and NOT actual Wii game saves.  So I bought an SD card in one of the deals from today (suggested in another topic) which I thought would basically become the equivalant of replacing memory cards.  Can someone clear this up for me?

Well pap ANYTHING is better than dial up. DSL is alright but I prefer a cable speed connection and hopefully Verizon FiOS(fiber optic) comes out really soon in my area since I want to upgrade to that thing as fast as I could.

Anything IS better than dial-up... but the question is, WHAT is affordable?

And if the only thing available in your area is satellite tv... ugh... (thank god that doesn't apply to me though!)

Also, I know that there are wifi hotspots for the DS.... shouldn't those same hotspots work for the Wii as well? Could you take your Wii to a McDonalds and do your updates there?

... c'mon Wii LCD screen!
