My Wii stopped recognizing my remote
« on: November 20, 2006, 07:46:43 AM »
This morning I tried logging into the Shop Channel.  It was unable to connect for whatever reason.  No biggie, I just try again.  I successfully login, but then my console stops recognizing my remote.  There's no pointer on the screen.  The "one" light on my remote isn't lit; when I push a button all four of the lights blink a few times, but nothing happens.  I try using SYNC but that doesn't work.  I try taking out the batteries on the remote but that doesn't work.  Eventually I push the reset button on my Wii and the remote starts working again.

Any idea what happened?  Has this happened to anyone else?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Maybe after SYNChronization you have to reset?  (Like how in Windows when you install or upgrade things you have to reboot and stuff.) I don't know, but thankfully it wasn't permanent in your case.

Come to think of it, I never had to use the SYNC button yet (the Remote that came with it works fine) and I never read the manual...  >_>

When I open up the second Wii Remote I have will I have to SYNCh it up?

EDIT: Now that I read your post more carefully are you sure you just didn't lose the pointer because it went off-screen?  That's happened to me a couple times, but I never really "lost" it.

I had the same thing happen yesterday.  Was very strange and random.  I managed to solve it by unplugging the system entirely.

If you need to resync, what you need to do is press the hidden SYNC button under the front flap of the Wii.  Immediately after, press the sync button under the battery cover of your Wiimote.

The controller that comes with the console comes pre-synced (according to my source at Nintendo), while the others will need to be synced in a similar manner.

They use Bluetooth, so you have to do it this way so that they can exchange the keys properly.

You really need to sync them? Because with Wiisports I had 3 wiimotes going and never synced them up.

It depends.  Other RF interference can cause you to lose sync, especially with other active Bluetooth devices around.  When you turn on your new remote for the first time, it should try to sync automatically, but it's possible that it might fail.  The procedure above forces it.

Had the same problem.  The reason that turning off the console works is because there are two different modes (according to the manual) for storing the "sync" info. and the system will default to the initial "sync" settings for the packaged wiimote when turned off and back on.

Manual?  This thing came with a manual?  Interesting.  I was pretty sure mine came with a thick stack of paperback books, and I thought mine was part of a shipment intended for Barnes & Noble, but the Wii played the same, so I didn't worry about it.  I might have to go through there and see if one of them might be a manual.

The same thing happened to me, except restarting didn't work, and SYNC did. Hmm.

Pages 20 and 21 in the Wii Operations Manual: System Setup booklet were very helpful to me. Basically, there are two controller syncing methods. One is "permanent" (for your own controllers) and the other is temporary (for when you bring your controller to a friend's house). The sync button method is the more permanent. Using the Wii menu to connect controllers is temporary.

If you have gone through the synchronization proccess for a remote, you only have to press a button and then it will automatically connect (assuming the Wii is on).

Edit: Crockinator beat me to it. Well, at least I gave page numbers.
Thanks for listening.
