WiiConnect24 options
« on: November 05, 2006, 12:58:54 AM »
I know connect24 hasn't been clarified on, but it's good enough to ask.

There are many ISP's over here that offer "off peak" periods, typically between 1 and 8am, where downloads/uploads are not included in our overall allowance for that month.

I do know it's possible to block all traffic via a certain device through a certain timeframe on a wireless router, but is there any (as yet mentioned) way to limit wii to only go online and get updates during a certain time?

thats strange, here we have a flat rate payment for Broadband Internet.  I'd hate to think how much I would run up if I hat some sort of rate or allowance to work from.

....sorry i didn't answer any of your questions, but I'm sure Nintendo will give us the options.

Well how routers work are they evenly distribute the overall speed to X devices hooked up to the router  and there is some latency caused in the router because there IS software in the router and the data has to go through the software then to its destination. The best way to have the "most speed" with the Wii at 1 - 8am is to simply keep the Wii the only active connection on.  But the thing is that I HIGHLY doubt that these upgrades nintendo or X publisher will be large due to Wii's 512MB internal flash memory so you will not have to worry about these things and plus the upgrades should not take long at all.

The overrun rates beyond the allowances depends on what ISP you're with here. I get 25gb per calendar month which is more than enough for all of us in this place. Last month we used 15gb. There are super basic options as little as 500mb a month here too.

Reason why i ask is, we tend to notice when our router is being hammered so having wii downloading when we are using the connection most might be a pain.

I must be patient. One month to go.

Mog, I'd die with just 25GB a month! I have 40GB here at school and use at least 35GB a month. I use much more at home.

I had never even heard of ISPs with a download/upload limit until a couple months ago. What are you paying for that?

I'm paying £18.95 for 25gb a month. That's about $36.

It's apparently pretty common in Europe to pay by bandwidth instead of flat rate.

You won't see it often in the states.

I have sattelite broadband and it has a limit as well. If we cross 350 mega bytes in like 2 hrs they will cut our download speed down to 8kbs a second (called FAPPING) from 130-200kbs, and it will stay like that for up to 10 hrs. How I wish we had the option of other forms of high speed internet (it also costs 70$ a month!).

Satellite broadband, 130-200kbs, and $70 (US) per month? Rip-off. I get unlimited down/up, 180kbs (only because they gave me a USB 1.0 modem because at the time I did't get an ethernet card, otherwise it is 300kbs), and only $40 (CAD) with taxes included.

Well when you have the choice between sattelite or 3kbs a second, tops, dialup then it is the better deal lol.

Haha, yeah. Actually it's wierd that they don't have DSL (btw that's what I have), it uses the same phone line just like dial-up, definately wierd, oh well.

In regards to WiiConnect24, I bet there will be an option to choose if you want automatic update or manual update.

All ISPs have bandwidth caps. Some just won't tell you what it is, and you won't know if you've exceeded the magic number till you get a letter in the mail.

DSL has severe distance limitations. It also can't be used on any voice loops that contain fiber (especially the fruit variety). Data fiber (i.e., Verizon FIOS) has very good range.

'Course ya'll is too po' in the country for fiber! Here, have some more expensive satellite instead.
