Battlefield 2142 potentially includes malware

Until you see a proof that it doesn't, avoid the game at all costs:

BF2142 is said to include spyware that monitors your browsing habits and uses it to show targeted ingame advertising.

No matter how much you like the game DO NOT BUY. This behaviour must not be encouraged or tolerated. Tell everyone, possibly even your local news reporter.

The other course of action is to buy the game and get it to display pornographic ads (or possibly even something that's illegal in your country), then rush off to the ESRB or Jack Thompson and give EA a real headache. Though I don't think that'd work that well...

Hm, I wonder if there are any indexed EA games they could accidentally advertise in Germany... That is a crime, after all.

There was never any danger of me buying this anyway. I love your second idea, KDR, but I'm guessing the game is designed not to display pornographic ads.

No idea about the demo, they've included a huge-ass warning with the game (inside the box though so you can't return it when you learn about that) so I guess they know they're doing something shady so maybe they're too scared to do that with the demo as well.

I haven't noticed any ads in the demo.  Funny that you get ads when you pay for it and not the other way around.  Oh well, I wasn't exactly thrilled with the demo, anyway.

I can't get the damn demo to even work. It can never seem to contact the EA master server. I had this same problem with Battlefield 2.

i don't get it?  WTF could u possibly advertise in that game........the ad should coincide with the 2142 date right?  What product would A) still be around B) fit for this game?

I mean if your going to have in game advertising atleast make it believable to the game....For Example 2142 should not have a ad about a Sony product, you know cause by the year 2142 they'll be long gone.

As for the spying crap.......I hope someone finds a way to block it out completely from the game.  One of my teachers is completely a Battlefield addict, I'd bet he will flip over this piece of news.

I don't think many publishers who use in-game advertising really care if it fits in the context of the game, as long as it makes them money.  For example, didn't one of the Splinter Cell games have really absurd posters strewn about the levels or something?

In an ideal world, yes. When you're dealing with EA, on the other hand...

Guess there are no ads in the demo so people don't notice it's a full price ad game.

Coca Cola.  They survived the Cola Wars and the cockroaches will be enjoying it when we are all gone.
Ironically though I could see in-game real time advertising in say an online racing game or other online games.
